Darwin strikes again.
MACON COUNTY, N.C. -- Authorities said an Alabama woman whose body was found outside her locked SUV in a parking near a hiking trail died of hypothermia after being unable to reach her keys inside.
The body of Sandra Ordner, 47, of Daphne, Alabama, Ala., was found on Jan. 31 hours after she had phoned home to tell her husband she was going hiking.
Sheriff Robert Holland of Macon County, North Carolina, N.C., told the Press-Register in Mobile, Alabama, Ala., that it had been cold and raining in the hours before Ordner's body was found in the parking lot of the Whiteside Mountain Trail.
A funeral for the Atlanta native was held Wednesday in Norcross, Georgia, Ga.
One would think it wouldn't take a genius to break a window instead of freeze.

Yes break the window or have a coat on even for hiking. You can always take it off. I do. 0 -
Anybody ever tried to break a car window? I was at the Chevrolet dealership one day when a Suburban caught fire. One of the mechanics beat on that window for two or three minutes with a three pound hammer without breaking it. I gave him a spring loaded center punch and he broke the window. Car windows can be pretty tough. You could probably do it with a pointed rock, but you would have to know what you are doing.
I always carry a spring loaded center punch in the car and truck in case I ever have to break a car window, but if I was locked out that would do me much good, because I keep it inside the car.0 -

Sounds like a cleverly cloaked (painless) suicide, to me. ... might even qualify for double indemity for the survivors.

It can be VERY difficult to break some car windows...I've smacked my truck hitch against a car window, just to have it bounce of about 10 times before it finally broke. 0 -
I have done this. You just take your sock off, put 4 or 5, 2 inch rocks in the sock. Then stand beside the vehicle ahd swing the rock filled sock. The window will break.
Of course you will be cleaning glass out of the vehicle for the next 2 years, but hey, it's better than freezing to death.0 -
yep put my fist right through one and drug a guy half out of it, the trick is all about angle
none story related but a pinky nail sized piece of ceramic from a spark plug thrown at a side window will go right through it like it wasn't there, and silent0 -

actually i'll tell you
my next door neighbor when i was a kid grew up to be a car thief, he learned about it in jail{lol}, told me about it 20 years ago, one day i was at a junk yard so i give it a try, first one was from the side and to gentle, second one i whizzed pretty hard strait on, and it went through like the window was not there, it did not even effect the trajectory of the ceramic, i double checked it same results
before anyone flames about the windows the care where stripped, and going into the shredder0 -

She had an MI or CVA."
The state medical examiner in Raleigh did an autopsy and he said hypothermia. She was found in the morning by a hiker who had just driven up to hike the trail so she was out there all night.0 -

Tempered glass *is* quite tough.
Never tried, but if all else failed, I suppose my .357 would probably work. (I'd hope that if I were out in the woods alone hiking, that's what I'm going to have on me).
Its worth pointing out that one of the hallmarks of hypothermia is confusion and disorientation.
By the time this woman got back to her car, she probably wasn't thinking clearly anymore, and had no idea what was going on, or how to get into it.
So let's not be so harsh to judge here.0 -

CVA would be unmistakeable in an autopsy.
MI would usually be detectable too (though not always), and unless the ME in this case were grossly sloppy or lazy, his conclusion is likely correct.0 -

I was visiting my girlfriends house in Atlanta a few years ago.
The neighbor's car was broken in to one night. They broke out the passenger's window. All they stole was some nursing scrubs so it was perplexing.
The cops told the girl that these black gangs in Atlanta have their new members do this for initiation, break out a window and steal anything in the car.
The cop said they break the window by putting a spark plug in a sock and swinging that at the window.0
