Buy a new gun, or a new barrel for old shotgun?

I want Brandy to have her own "home defense" gun. While I trust her to safely handle my pistols, I don't have much confidence in her ability to hit a man with one at any distance beyond arm's reach.

She needs a shotgun

Currently the only shotgun I own is an old Win. model 1300 20 ga. Unfortunatly, it has the "goose gun" barrel on it. I'd like to have something a little more compact.

I see a used 18in barrel on the auction side, the "buy now" price is $190. I'd be willing to pay about $150, but I'd like your opinions on if the barrel is even worth that much.

My other option is to buy a new shotgun, something I would do but with reluctance.

Suggestions?

    I see 12ga mossberg 500's with house markings (westernfield etc) for $80-90 at pawnshops all the time....

    I found a used Mossberg 88 a few years back for $190. It isn't in the best condition and it isn't the best shotgun but it get's the job done. I've wanted to buy another barrel for my Browning BPS but just can't part with that kind of money. I'd rather buy another gun.

    I just bought a Mossberg 500 with a short barrel and a long barrel, 12 Gauge for $220 NIB.

    The guy has the same setup in a 20 Gauge, for, I think, $240 or so.

    Doug: Thanks for the tip, but after I'd pay shipping, ffl fee, etc. It would push it way out of price range.

    I'm going to make a small bid on that barrel, see if I can get it for less than $100

    Picked up a mod 88 at academe last year home model 18 in barrel pump for $160. And for another $50 you can buy the folding stock and heat shield for it.makes a great home gun and its new.

    Off a shotgun? Not hard, as long as you don't cut it too short. That will lead to HARD time! Last one I did, put the barrel in a padded vice, measured, and cut with a side cutter. Sanded the edges, used some rust-o-leum on the cut edge, and put her back together. Not a real technical way to do it, but it worked! You do know that it opens the barrel up, makes it "no choke," don't you? Not a problem with a home defense shotgun though.

    I don't think you should cut it.[:0] I'd pick up Mossberg for house duty and keep looking for the 1300 barrel. You should have another shotgun anyway [;)] so you both can enjoy some target and clay time together at the range or club.[8D]

    Fortune may have smiled on me, so I'd like your thoughts

    I'm looking at a Mossberg 500a 12 ga "Slugster" that I might be able to buy for $100. Not exactly ideal for home defense, but looks like a bargin.

    How much is a replacement barrel going to cost me? Is it going to be more trouble (and money) than its worth to buy the gun and a new barrel for it?

    Yeah, I've priced out barrels before. Often, if they're not as much as the shotgun itself, they're pretty darned close.

    Were it me, I'd just buy another gun. Heck, it is something that won't be kept in a safe (otherwise it would be useless for home defense) and you run the risk of theft when you're not home.

    You can pick up a used shotgun for a song. We're talking home-defense here, not hunting. Accuracy isn't that big of a deal, in a home-defense situation with a 12-gauge, you want it to FIRE, it really doesn't matter where the shot goes, it'll come close enough for that situation, and the bad guy will be either missing a limb or dead.

    My home defence shotgun is a 870 rem with a slug bbl.on it and 00 buck in it. A mossberg slug gun should be fine with out changeing bbl.s.But if you need to get a different bbl. mossberg bbl's are pretty low priced for a used one.
