7.62x39 for Sniper rifle?
Talked to a cop buddy of mine and he said he was considering taking his AK-47 (MAK-90 to be exact) and using it as a Sniper rifle. I did not agree with his choice, but he stated this rifle (his rifle) was plenty accurate for the job. I own a Saiga 7.62x39 and would never consider it good enough for long range, 200 yard, precision shots. Not when I have a Savage 110 L.E in 30/06. Any thoughts?

With autos your always looking at 2-3 MOA at best. I would never use one as a sniper rifle.... that why there are bolt actions. 0 -
You are mixing caliber and gun. The caliber 7.62 can be a very accurate round, just not out of an AK-47. 0 -
The best accuracy I have gotten from an auto-loader was from from my DPMS M4, alittle more than an inch and a half at 100 yards with Hornady Match. But this gun was not and is not designed for sniper duty and would never be used as such. 0 -
Sniper/counter sniper is a matter of 1/4 inches. You're not shooting at the eye or the nose. You are targeting the tip of the nose or a tear duct. I don't believe I'd trust a 7.62 X 39 round to have that precision at safe ranges for the shooter. JMHO. 0 -
Yeah, the .308 variety of 7.62. And only in bolt action. Sure there some "sniper" rifles configured on the AR platform, but bolt actions are still more inherently accurate, as a rule. 0 -

I think the notion of semi autos being less accurate than a bolt gun is becoming less of a rule. I just don't have the money to get one of them there. 0 -
There in lays the problem. I can go spend under $800 for a Savage or Remington bolt action in .308, 30-06,.270, you name it. Another $400 in a quality scope and have a tack driving, hair splitting "sniper" rifle. A quality auto-loader, capable of the same accuracy is $1200 or more, and that doesn't include optics. And you are limited to caliber. I know DPMS and Armalite have "sniper" rifles, but the price is the problem. 0 -
Rock River A4 Varmint w/ Wylde Chamber is know to shot 1/2 moa at 100yrds. Ammo specific mind you. Big money just for the gun. Need optics.

thats not really true, my M1A is very accurate so is my Armalite AR-10T, then look at the barrett.0 -
no, you do not want to use a 7.62x39 Ak for a sniper rifle. it's a sucky platform for optics, you don't have the option to remove the front sight, your choice of buttstocks will be woefully limited, the forestock is too short, scratchy creepy military trigger, and while non-com-bloc 7.62 ammo has acceptable accuracy, the ballistics are horrid irregardless of manufacturer. too much bullet drop. you won't see all that much at 200 yards but a) you can do better and b) you don't know that you won't need shots out to 300, 400, 500 yards.
use something else. and start off by picking the caliber first.0 -
it's not always the caliber or type of the rifle, but the shooter behind the caliber, not saying the AK or AR is an ideal sniper rifle but there are some very acurate rifles that are considered obsolete. 6.5X55 comes to mind among others. 0 -

I love AKs, and I beleive for the most part they are plenty accurate for a police patrol, or a combat rifle. However, an AK is not a sniper rifle by any stretch of the imagination.
I can't beleive for a second that his PD would consider the use of an AK as a sniper rifle(unless he's the cheif of some po-dunk town) .0 -
Consider for a moment that a lot of experanced police "snipers" think that 100yd (note only 2 zeros) is a LLLLOOOONNNNGGGG shot. 0 -

OK let me say first that I am not a sniper, secondly I don't understand why when people talk about sniper rifles they talk about 100 yards. I shoot a 100 yards with a 22 or 22Mag., there just seems to me that there is so much more that can go wrong out there over 100 yards that its Kinda silly to use that as a measure of shooting skills. My neighbor and his friends have a shooting area that they will shoot at all day every day at 100 yards, and it seems silly to me.
You spend $800.00 for a rifle another $300.00 bucks for a scope and shoot 100 yards? I don't get it. Go out set up at 1000 yds and then talk about sniper. He (my neighbor) gets mad when I go over and talk to them about putting the targets farther out, he says a 100 yards is adequate. I think not.0 -

here is a world of difference between a police sniper and the military sniper.
Police normally take a shot inside 100 yards...and some around here have been accomplished at 35-40 yards.
Normally, the police want DRT.the military isn't offended, normally, by wounding...and shots are as far as a men is capable. makes sense..beating feet from a hundred yard aroused enemy leads to having to train LOTS of snipers...
As far as the Semi-auto `not being accurate', or `not being the first choice' sniper weapon.that information is obsolete.
Todays semi-autos rival the best bolt actions in accuracy..with the ability to take out multiple targets with no movement save riding recoil.0 -
The Average "Sniper" shot for urban police work is only 100 yards.
Choice is fine for him.

O.k, to address a few things...first, yes it is a small south Georgia town where the Chief carries a Marlin 30/30 in his patrol car as his "assualt" rifle. Nothing wrong with the ol "thutty-thutty" and I can see a use for it in Law Enforcemnt, just don't call it an "assault" rifle. Second, the average Police sniper shot is 75 yards. And while it is just cool as #$@* to shoot 1000 yards, it is total over-kill in Law Enforcement. And as I said before, you CAN get bolt action accuracy from an auto-loader, but at a very expensive price. By the way, a Savage 30-06 w/ "scope" is a good buy. 0 -
Interesting display of the confusion brought about by semantics but it does raise several questions. If the "average police sniper shot" is 75 yards and you deem it prudent to never exceed the average, why not equip police 'snipers' with handguns (or shotguns)? There a numerous makes/calibers available capable of brain stem shots at that range and ammo is cheaper. If, however, you decide that some day you might need to engage a target at - say 76 yards (or 276 Y) - you may want to select a platform that is bit more flexible that anything shooting the 7.62 X 39! 0
