Anyone know how long a surgery

takes to repair a broken wrist with a plate installed. Just an approx time... My 80 yr old Mom fell this afternoon and put the bone thru the skin.

    Mom broke her wrist last year. 45 minutes from the start until the Doc called the room and said everything went ok.

    it depends. not everything is as it apprears from the outside once you get in there. while it may be typically a 1 hour procedure, if theres major reconstruction to be done, it could take two, or three. there could also be, god forbid, complications during the surgery. about an hour sounds right but be patient.

    Just got the return call. She is out of surgery. 2.5 hours and two plates installed. Dr. said he needs to see her in 2 weeks to see if it healed ok. If not they have to amputate the left hand.

    Getting old is not for the faint of heart.

    I hope everything turns out well for your mother, I will say a prayer for her.

    I don't have any knowledge of the time it takes, but Sandy and I are sending up prayers for quick, complete healing, and as little pain as possible.

    Dealing with aging parents is something I have much recent experience in.

    You did not say what physical and mental condition your mother was in before the fall. Assuming she was active with a clear mind, this could be the beginning of a change, and not for the better. Elderly people oftem times don't bounce back from broken bones, especially when breaks are as bad as you describe. Hopefully she has insurance and sufficient funds to where she can get quality rehab.

    Other questions: does she take care of her own business matters such as pay bills and write checks? If this is her writing hand, she could need some assistance. Does she drive herself to where she needs to go, such as grocery shopping and to church? Not only is her lifestyle going to change, so is the lifeslyles of those close to her. She will need lots of help and assurance for a while...and maybe for a long time.

    Older people do not always get doctor comments and instructions exactly right, especially when they are injured like the way your mother is. I recommend you or one of your sisters or brothers be in attendance when the doctors come by her room to visit. Get a spiral notebook and start making notes on what the doctors say--notes that you and others can refer back to later. Note blood pressures, temperatures, and comments the nurses make. Also make a list of questions you have for the doctors and have the list ready when the doctors show up.

    This is one time you will have to help your mother with thinking and decisions she will need to make. The break combined with the medications do not lend for clear thinking and sound decisions.

    I truely appreciate all the concern. Mom will be in the hospital till around Sat... No cast yet cause Dr. wants to see if she gets infection. Two plates installed. She was washing the car and was on a two step stepstool. Now the bad and good news. My younger sister called first to explain what happened. Said she would call after surgery and didn't. I called the hospital and of course with all the privacy BS they didn't want to say anything. I promptly held my tongue and ask to speak to the head nurse. I explained I was born in the same hospital she was working at. I ask again to get a report if the surgery went ok. The nurse had the Dr. call me at home.He was polite and told me what might happen. A big ol' lump kinda collected in my throat. I called my sister at her home just a few minutes ago. She is concerned she will have to take care of Mom. Sister is out of work and sure the hell has the time to do this. She cussed me out and said for me to come take care of Mom. Well that is exactly what I plan on doing. I have an eviction in court Monday and I am off to Indiana to load up her car, and belongings to come to SC. My witch sister won't have to worry about anything. I plan on putting my house up for sale my Mom lives in and taking the first realistic offer ( even from a realtor) on it. Mom can live in a warm climate and forget about all the cold weather or possibility of catching pneumonia. Funny how when the going gets tough how some bow out and won't help out.
