A worthy cause for Veterans-help please
I want to ask you guys for some help.
A friend of mine from college is a former Navy Seal. He has just started a Veterans Resource Center.
He is working with Veterans as an advocate and also maintains a facility for Veterans to hang out and come to for help. It is located in a former Subway building and is outfitted with couches, chairs, computers, tv, as well as private rooms.
The vision statement is:
The Veterans Resource Center is a learning organization committed to strengthening the lives of Veterans, their families, and the community.
Some of the things he is doing is a Veteran oral history project, hosting meeting space for other Veteran groups, pickup point for the area DAV bus, and helping returning Veterans assimilate back into society as well as get their benefits.
The center is in the process of getting non-profit status. He just opened this week and is having fund raising problems. He tapped out all the local sources getting building and remodeling to get the doors open and is seeking donations. To get the center open he has had support form the VA, state, county, local business, individuals, and local veterans organizations. He asked me to help him out and knowing how you guys support Veterans causes I thought I would run it by you.
Donation of any amount are greatly appreciated and are going to a worthy cause.

Tom Carpenter of Elkton is also an amputee, having lost parts of both legs in Iraq. He rode a hand-crank bike. With him were five fellow veterans, two of whom flew flags from their bikes.
Was that hard in the wind?
"It's kind of a ridiculous question for me, because I think of my brothers and sisters over in Iraq," said Jathan Chicoine, a Navy veteran from Vermillion.
The group was on the third University of South Dakota veterans club ride of the Tour de Kota.
Their group got an especially warm welcome from many of the towns it passed, said Sean Chicoine, also of Vermillion.
He said the most touching moment came somewhere between Volin and Irene. "We had a vet, with his wife, almost run to his driveway and stand at attention."
Carpenter's reason for riding was common to everyone here, but one that held a special meaning coming from him:
"Why do I ride? Because I can."
Also spearheaded a flag display which travels South Dakota. It consists of a flag for every American veteran killed in Irag and Afghanistan. The display pictured was set up in Alcestor SD and was around 4300 flags.0 -
I will try later to help out a little donation, but I do have some suggestions.
How about a soup supper open to the community for donations.
Or raffle off a new gun that could probably be purchase at cost from your local FFL for advertising.
Maybe have your soup supper on conjuction with a auction of donated good from your areas businesses. Alot of businesses are very generous when it come to donating to Veteran causes. These kind of events can be put together with little money, but alot of foot work.0 -
There is already a community Veteran supper which help with this project.
A raffle is a great idea!
