Opinion on Rifle's

Excluding cost, right out of the box which brand do you like best? I'll start, I cant resist a Remington Model 700 BDL Custom Deluxe.

    Savage.

    They aren't as pretty as the 700's but the cost less and have irrefutably good out-of-the-box accuracy.

    Out of the box it's very close toss up between rem.700 or savage 110 imho rem is a better looking rifle but dollar to dollatr value the savage is hard to beat

    Agree with the Savage. I have had to do alot of load development for my M70 but my Savage 110 will shoot almost anything into 1" at 200 yards. Can't complain about that.

    God blessed me with a sweet M70 out of the box.
    Dollar for dollar I read that the Savage's can't be beat and will be my next purchase. Remington quality has slipped as of late.

    If price isn't a factor, I think that the Kimber 8400s are best thing that I have handled. I do not own one, but have had the fortune to shoot a couple and they are sweet!

    Not to hijack, but what do you guys think of Browning A bolt? I just got one, first Browning I've owned. Do I need to trade it for a Savage? I haven't shot the A-bolt, yet. Saving for a scope.

    Got one in 7-08. It is my go-to deer rifle. Love it!

    my newest rifle is the sav 340B in .222, older factory gun that does 1" @ 100 or better
    my even older m99 will do close to the same and it has open sights!
    i used to get a lot of laughs at the club slipping that old lever out ot the sack, but they got quiet pretty fast when it shot as good as their fancy new stuff

    I would definitely put the Browning A-bolt on the short list to compare to the others. I'd say compares very well to Rem 700. I have no experience with the Savage.

    My son-in-law, we hunt deer in Nov. together, and I've made him into a serious woodchuck shooter-dittor coyotes. When we first paired up in 2000 he had a Browning A-Bolt LH action in .270Win with a Redfield 4X in Redfield rings. Last year he won a Savage M111 Sporter in 30-06 with Accu-Trigger and I put a used Leupold Vari-Power on it. Both rifles have std. factory triggers and barrels, and both shoot as well as my beloved pre-l964 Win Model 70's and my Pre-Garcia Sako varmint rifle in .243Win- all my rifles wear Leupolds. We went to Wyoming this past Oct. for mulies- took our 30-06's with Fed. Premium 165 grain loads-so any of these are first class factory rifles- notice I said factory, the custom rifles by Jenny Jarrett and Mark Basner are rolex rifles with rolex prices- if I win the lottery I'll maybe buy a Dakota BA in .375 for Alaska-maybe. The Rem 700 is the mainstay in .308 for sniper/swat/special ops. rifles, I see Remington is offered their version of the Mauser 98 long extractor now, and rumor says a USA Co. in the South will be remaking the classic pre-64 M70- My only rule for accuracy is I strongly prefer a Bolt Action, but as they say: You pays your money and takes your choice.

    I have several brands that come to mind...older Rem 700's( Illion,NY made ones), Winchester 70's, Browning A-bolt, CZ 527/550, SAKO 75/85, and the Tikka T-3. If I had to pick one, it would be the SAKO, no questions asked.

    The model 70's are no more [:(] , but with all the input on the Savages , that is what my next rifle will more then likely be [B)]
    I like the Medallion A bolts with one exception , I have 1 in 375H&H and one in 300 Win Mag , both have the detach mags , and both limit the O.A.L of my handloads . Anyone one else ever have this problem with the A bolts [?] ( Don't want/mean to hi jack thread [:o)] )

    Yes I have a SS A-Bolt in 300 Win. I shoot the Barnes XLC/TSX bullets of 130 and 150 grain, and do not have that problem, as I am seating the bullets 0.015" of the lands, and they still fit in the magazine. Therefor it is throated for the shorter magazine as well.

    As for the Winchester Model 70's...they are coming back. FN will be producing them in their Southern plant.

    If we're really excluding cost, I'll vote for something in full custom, down to the reciever, nickel plated with gold trimmings. [:D]

    If you're looking at new rifles, I think Remington is a bit irrelevant. They've taken a fine, basic rifle and priced it too close to the midrange market. Savage is by far the best value. If you're in the market for a new Rem, you may as well start looking at Browning, Sako, and Kimber.

    I am limited to 2.80" OAL with my 7-08. This puts the bullets about 0.035" off the lands using Nosler BT and Accubonds. I would like to load them out further, but I can't. However, the load that I am using in it is extremely accurate, so I don't complain (too loudly).
