Who knows metal stamping dies?
Looking on ideas of how they are made. Anybody?

I am in the die business but the jewely side is a different animal. We could make the part for you on the 5 axis hard mill. It would be made out of A-2 or M-2 tool steels with a RC of 58-60. We could digitize the art and get it made. I would estimate the cost to be in the 700-1,000.00 range but the price is a W.A.G.
CAD data would be the cheapest way for us to quote it for you.

What metal(s) are you going to stamp? A-2 is wonderful, but if you are planning on stamping aluminum then H-13 might be a better choice as a tool steel. 0 -
But wouldn't the "A-2" cover everything up to RC-50 or better? 0 -
The metal would be 22 and 24 gauge nickel and sterling. I would like a total of 4 dies made, all the same design, just different sizes. Could you take an existing stamping to make the new die? Would be running this on a 32 ton press.

I see a lot of dies used to stamp Alum and SS being coated with a TiC (or TiCN) underlayer and a top coat of MOST (MolyDisulfide and Ti blend).
Of course the fact that I work in the tool coating industry means I see a large # of dies.0 -
So how would you transfer the 3-D artwork to CAD?

Must be a DFX file to work in cad. We make all kinds of forging and blank out dies in the shop, how big, how detailed?

The largest one would be around 5" in dia., working down to about 2". This would have a lot of detail. An Indian head. Will send pics to whomever can get a ballpark price on all 4 dies plus maybe even some trim dies to clean up the stampings after the're formed.
