Am I getting too old ?
It a perfect day to go bunny hunting as we are in the middle of a nice january thaw, but here I sit on the putor instead. I lost my hunting buddy from way back in high school days about 5 years ago.He drowned while out fishing.Anyway,I don`t feel like going alone and I really don`t want to make new hunting friends cause I`m set in my ways. The best part of hunting is who your hunting with.It just ain`t the same.

But sometimes it is nice to just be walking the woods and fields alone with a rifle in your hand...whether you actually pop bunnies or not. Who knows...you may find a few coke cans that need to be put out of their misery.
Get out there and shoot them.0 -
Amen, Medic
Where ya at Sooper?0 -
Pretty much doing the same thing here. Been thinking about going fishing for the last hour. 0 -
I would admire to go bunny hunting with ya Soopershot. Squirrels too. Got a beagle? 0 -
Just called my hunting buddy. Your post made me think soopershot, thanks.
This will give me a chance to take out the Weatherby, I've been meaning to put some rounds through it for a while now.0 -

Agreed.[:)][:)]0 -
soopershot, sometimes ya just gotta make yourself get out and do some plinking. Or fishing or whatever.
But thanks for hanging out with the rest of us reprobates.0 -
Yep, lost my best hunting buddy 6 years ago to cancer, and just haven't been out much since. I miss the good (and bad) hunts we had together.[V] 0 -
We used to take turns being the beagle because we didn`t have one.One would go in the thick stuff and get all cut up so the one on the outside could get a shot. When a bunny took off we`d howl like a beagle. When the day was done we`d have a mess of bunnies and be pretty tore up ourselves. We did it that way since we were kids.I do go out alone from time to time and it`s ok sometimes, but not today.
We`d go out on days like this and trim apple trees and make brush piles for awhile, then go hunting. Then in the spring we`d fertilize under the trees so they would produce more apples. That helped the bunnies and the deer.
I still hunt with my buddies younger brother and nephew, but his brothers knees are going bad so he doesn`t go out much anymore and I find I don`t care as much anymore because it isn`t what it once was.
Oh the times they are a changin.0 -
The times are always changing, but sometimes we don't notice so much.
My dad bred beagles and field trialed with them as well as hunted over them, so I grew up hunting bunnies over beagles, got my Dog Care merit badge with one, and midwifed a bunch of pups. My dad passed three years ago and I kept a stiff upper lip and took it pretty well. This fall my mom moved into a retirement community and we have been cleaning out the house, getting it ready to sell, and I ran across his pin from the old Hawkeye Beagle Club. Completely undid me, so much had gone.
Yep, I would be proud to hunt a bunnie with ya.0 -
At the risk of being ID'd as a religious instigator, go.
I think you'll find he's out there with you.0 -

I feel you. I have found that with many things in life its not what you are doing but who you are doing it with. I lost alot of interest in some things when I lost a good friend.
Maybe if you got out and hunted by yourself you could remember all the good times you had together. I'm sure he would want you out hunting and not sitting around.0 -
your ? am i getting too old?
my question is do you need little blue pills?[:D]0 -
Hunting was used more as an excuse, to get out in the field with old friends. Spending time together, collecting memories. You didn't have to tell each other which way you were going to go around a hill, or where you were going to meet, you all pretty much knew what the other was going to do, you had been doing it for so long.
Never had to tell each other to hush up, or be still, or to bring a roll of T-paper along. Didn't have cell phones ringing, or the alarm on watches going off. A nod of the head, was all that was needed most times.
My hunting buddies have either moved away, or passed away, and like you, I am set in my ways. Not many of the youngsters were interested in hunting, but I guess the timing was about right. Since this old bag of bones won't let me do any more "roughing it" anyway.0 -
I understand what you going thru, Soop. I about gave up duckhuntin' when my uncle passed. A conversation with a family mamber changed that. They said Conrad would want me to go, that he would be there. He didn't teach me his tricks for me to sit on the couch.
Another uncle had just about the same thing happen as you have. He kept beagles and hunted for as long as I can remember, but when his buddy passed, he lost interest. Now that I have my own dogs, I quiz him every chance I get. You can see the fire come back in his eyes. He's still got it. I'm just gonna give him some more time before I tear him off the couch.0 -
Soop - I have lost several of my hunting buddies. some older and some younger - that is the bad part of getting older. I still hunt as much as i can, as i figure that is what they would want me to do. I have instructed my sons that if I die when we are out hunting that they just dig a shallow hole next to me, take my coat, hat and gun and roll my dead butt in it - and remember that I died happy doing something i loved. Most people want to die in their sleep, i want to die in the field. I couldn't stand it if they stopped hunting because i wasn't with them.
I have found a few younger guys to hunt with in the past few years, and i still do things my way - maybe a little slower. The yonger hunters actually like the experience of a seasoned hunter on the trips. All you have to do is just go....0 -
Get out there and take your buddy with you, in spirit at least. What better way to enjoy a perfect day and honor a fallen friend. 0 -
This thread and the responses to it have nothing to do with hunting. But then, you already know this. 0 -
I love getting out away from "modern society" I don't have many places to hunt but it's just nice walking around out in the middle of no where.
I'll be shed hunting probably this week.[8D]0 -
i also lost my friend i hunted with for years. Since then i have not cared to find another person to hunt with. each year i ppay my dues to the same hunting club and never go. it's just not the same. As you i'm set in my ways and don't care to break in someone else. 0 -
Sounds like you guys all understand.Pickenup nailed my thoughts word for word. I tried to make myself go yesterday ,but stayed home instead.Too many people have died in the last few years and I would have just sat out there and cried. Maybe that wouldn`t have been a bad thing.....
I`ll probably go out and at least look for shed antlers next week providing I have a better outlook.0 -
Soop No, that would not be a bad thing. The loss of friends isn't an easy thing to deal with. I have lost two in the past few years, both good friends and hunting buddies and both far before there time. I tried to go out and not think about it, but that didn't do anything but make me angry and depressed. What really worked was taking them with me. I gathered my gear and walked outside the house and said "ok Gregg and Rick, we're going trekking, you in?" (That was the phone call we would get whenever one of us was going out) I got in the truck and went, and I was surprised at the feeling I had when I got there, almost felt like they were there, but without the smell of Gregg's tomato soup his wife would always make for us. I won't say it was a great day but it was a good one, and every day in the woods is better than a day sitting at home. We were never the great white hunters and like pickinup said it was more an excuse to get out and walk in the woods than anything else. I know it sound's like something from the Hallmark channel, but it works for me. 0 -

I know what you are saying.
I thought I was the only one.0 -
i to have lost ALL my huntting friends including my dad and it makes it really hard to go out there. i no longer hunt but i do take walks in the woods and try to remember all my huntting buddies and all the good times we had. i know what you are dealing with 0 -
Same here,I didnt hunt deer this season, the boys broke up and went in several groups. Now I am trying to find excuses not to hunt yotes . 0 -
It seems we all share the same feelings.
Doug0 -
It's kind of strange, that we all have the same feelings about beatin the bushes with our old friends.Yet we all believe we're the only ones that feel those emotions.
Seems to me, their's only ONE thing to do...We all need to pull it together and make some new memories, new huntin buddies and do it now.
Ain't none of us gonna live forever, and if we still have it in us to go out there and do it,It needs to be done as soon as humanly possible.0 -
WISH I COULD GO TO THE WOODS.
want to move so far in the sticks wouldnt see a human for days[^][^]0 -

I am so sorry to hijack this thread but this is hilarious. Sooper, I swear to goodness you want another buddy to howl like a beagle I'd be honored. That is just too (pun WAY intended) doggone funny.0 -
I've faced (and face) all these problems myself! I'm older now, the bed feels REAL good at 4:00am and forcing myself to crawl out to go walk in the weeds just doesn't have a real appeal to me at that point!
Then I have to get everything loaded into the truck. About this time I see the gas gage is low, and I only have a $5 dollar bill on me, so I have to go to the bank now too!
The drive over too my buddies house is clear across town, and he's a good guy, but listen to him swine about the same things is try to fight an up-hill battle!
We finally set out to the field, I crawl out of the truck, it's cold and maybe abit wet too, and I asking myself how fun can this be!??
THEN magic happens! I pick up my weapon, load it up and like magic I'm a new person! Ready to march up hill and dale with my tongue hanging out for a "chance" at a shot. AND if I get one, now the day becomes memorable for the next decade! One I may re-live time after time!
...IF I can just get out of bed! *G* ...95% of life is just showing up for the event!0
