David, I'm really ignorant about what kind of gun and what type of safety you're talking about. What kind of locks?? I sure hate locks of any kind on any of my guns, except some that I may place there. Tom

    Now even Springfields, eh?

The thought of those locks make my blood pressure jump. Thanks for the heads up.

Sure, if you have the flat one that doesn't require fitting. There were two flat housings. One required filing the frame, and the other was a drop-in fit. Thanks.

Small hole in mainspring housing. Stick key in and rotate the doo-dad 90 degrees to lock it down. Easy to remove though.

Any chance that if an owner removes a gun lock, the gun gets stolen and used to kill someone that the person who removed the lock will be in big liability trouble?

That is what would worry me.

TR...I don't worry about removing the locks. Two of my Taurus' have them. I just don't use them. No biggie. My son's 870 has a key safety on it. Same deal. I don't ever use the key to lock it. Works really well. [:D]

I have one new S&W with the lock and I just ignore it.

There could be some liability issues if the gun is ever involved in any sort of a shooting incident. I know it's just a storage lock and has nothing to do with safety but you know how a sharp lawyer could make you look reckless for removing it.

I would suggest trying it out for a while before removing it. You may find it's a non-issue after all.

Are there built in locks on military firearms?? I have not purchased any with built in locks - and will not.

I bought my Springfield 1911 longslide back in '01 because all of the new 5" ones had the lock. They were the California legal ones then, now they all have them. Turns out, I was able to get the longslide for the same price as a 5" bbl because they were closing out the non-California legal guns!

I have a friend who tried to remove his.
    He's a gunsmith.

His comment was, "Just leave it. It's way too hard to remove it, and even if you can, you're left with a much bigger hole in the sideplate."

So I avoid the issue entirely. I just won't buy any gun with an integrated lock. I'll save my money for a fine, old, pre-lock unit.

MD requires it and my new HK USP has an integrated lock that is located in the mag well. I have never used it (I never even tried it) but I don't really care that it is there.

Have you seen something like this fail locked before?

Do they ever think of the liability of what happens if a gun lock malfunctions and you can't fire it. In todays world, they could just sue someone because it was locked when they needed it, even if they were the ones who locked it. At least that's what the anti's do in reverse.

it is listed as "semi-arched style c replaces original housing without alteration to the frame", but has style D checked but does have a very slight arch in the rubber

    with that being said never ever do you fit the frame to a part, but fit the part to the frame, shoot me an addy if you want it, i may have the parts to put it together so you can just drop it in{gotta find em if i don't have them all i'll send what i got}

If someone came to my office having been shot with a gun with the safety devices altered I'd say "Whoopie!!"

It's one thing to pin a grip safety or disable a series 80 safety or to lighten a trigger pull. You can claim that these were performance modifications on a target pistol. Of course, if it was loaded with +p hollowpoints at the time, you've got problems.

When you start defeating a lock, you have a double problem. Not only wasn't the gun locked, but you took it off! How un caring can you be?

Now, the internal lock is the BEST liability protection that a gun manufacturer can have.

    I'd leave it alone.

Disagree. If'n I shoot somebody, he ain't comin' to your office to complain, dig?

I took the lock off? Yup. A locked up gun is a freakin' PAPERWEIGHT, dude. Safe enough, I reckon, but a gun has to be unsafe to perform its function.

I believe in gun control. My guns, my control. My guns are either on me, within reach, or locked up, therefore, a built-in lock is totally unnecessary and useless.

The only way your logic holds water is if we declare it ILLEGAL to carry guns or shoot people with guns that are old enough not to have come from the factory with a lock.

you have that completely backwards, modifying internal safeties would be far worse to a jury, removing the lock is no different than removing a portable trigger lock or removing it from a safe, disabling the series 80 firing pin block or pinning the grip safety is extremely different, i personally will not own a gun with a lock on it

Without even finding out if it was justified first? Don't think as much of the second ammendment as you do the dollar, huh?
