The illegal immigrant named Texan of the Year
DALLAS - Because everybody in Texas "has felt the tidal wave of his presence," the illegal immigrant has been named the Texan of the Year by the Dallas Morning News.
"We can't seem to live with him and his family, and if we can live without him, nobody's figured out how," the report posted on the Dallas Morning News' Web site on Saturday said.
The newspaper identified illegal immigration as perhaps the largest story in the nation and in the state in 2007. Texas' immigrant population has increased by nearly 33 percent since 2000, according to an analysis of government data by the Washington-based Center for Immigration Studies.
In that period, the number of total immigrants entering the country has exceeded all previous historical eras. Half the immigrants in Texas - about 7 percent of all Texans - are here illegally.
"The illegal immigrant is the waiter serving margaritas at our restaurant table, the cook preparing our enchiladas.
"He works grueling hours at a meatpacking plant, carving up carcasses of cattle for our barbecue (he also picks the lettuce for our burgers). He builds our houses and cuts our grass. She cleans our homes and takes care of our children."
The newspaper says that to their champions, illegal immigrants are "decent, hardworking people who, like generations of European immigrants before them, just want to do better for their families."
But the newspaper says that to opponents of illegal immigration, those who come to the United States illegally "are essentially lawbreakers who violate the nation's borders. They use public resources, schools, hospitals to which they aren't entitled and expect to be served in a foreign language. They're rapidly changing Texas neighborhoods, cities and culture, and not always for the better. Those who object get tagged as racists."
This is not the first time the paper's editorial board has gone with a composite rather than an individual. In 2005, editorial writers selected the city of Houston as its Texan of the Year for its response to Hurricane Katrina.

yes fishkiller... and they are nearly all of "middle eastern appearance"...it is hard to even find out what country they come from!! our navy should sink their damn boats!!...they say they leave their country because they are in fear of their lives, or because they are "being persucuted".. but they all head to indonesia first!! indonesia has the biggest muslim population on earth..so they wont be persucuted there so why the hell dont they stay there!!.."refugees" coming here get preferential treatment that australians can only dream about!! it sucks, but at least people are starting to speak out about it at long last..we should treat them exactly as their governments would treat us!!as muslims they understand "an eye for an eye"..it is at the stage here now that if muslim terroists attack my country it wouldnt be very healthy to be a muslim, a lot of people would use that as an excuse to hit back! and rightly so..as i said, i dont care if anyone thinks that makes me a racist or my country racist!!!!come here legally, or stay the hell away and there is no problem!!! 0 -

Can't speak for Dan, But if I recall if you go to/spend a long time in Australia you need a bond to fly your ass out if you decide to squat in the country without welcome.

Even though it has that ring to it, being so named isn't necessarily an honor.
These end of the year titles only indicate the person or persons selected have been judged as impacting the rest of the population's lives the most during the year-for better OR worse-not that they're a model person.
Notice that Time's Person of The Year has ranged from Lindbergh in the 20's to Hitler in the 30's to Stalin in the 40's to Rudy Guliani in '01? Some did very good and some did very bad, but they each effected how the year went for us.
These titles can be granted to either the famous or the infamous, some people just can't seem to draw the distinction.
That being said, I do take issue with illegal immigrants being referred to as Texans. That's a birthright. [;)]0
