Winchester 670, 30-06
I posted this in ask the experts but no help. So i will try here.
Can I put the model 670 action and barrel on a model 70 stock and get the floor plate and magazine parts and make it all work.

I did exactly this in the early 1970s.
You would be better off buying the gun you want.
Cheaper, faster, easier, less drama, less work, less headaches and better final results.
If you want a Model 70 then go buy a Model 70. You will be much happier.0 -

I see what you're saying, SaxonPig, but remember there are a whole bunch of us who enjoy the drama, the work, and the headaches. The tinkering is part of the fun, and for some it's the biggest part. We just have to remember that (like most hobbies) it's going to cost us money, not make us money.0 -
The rifle was my grandpa's and I've hunted with it for several years.
The stock is rough, and the floorplate would make it easier to unload. Price for parts is'nt a big factor. Just needed to khow if the parts from model 70 will fit the model 670.0 -

Sure you can hug me if you want, assuming you look like Raquel Welch did on that great poster in the movie "The Shawshank Redemption"> I am a pre-l964 Winchester guy-grew up with Winchesters in all the family in the l950's- 12 years a Armorer USMC specializing in accurizing rifles- USMC Gy./Sgt. Legend Carlos N. Hathcock used a target grade pre-l964 M70 30-06 with a 10x Unertl scope in his first stint with Capt. James Land "in country"- later went to the Rem. 700 M40 in .308. If you really want a pre-l964 M70 30-06 (I have two, not for sale) let me help you out. Sure you can take a Post-l964 mfg. Win. 670, buy at an inflated price all the parts from the after-market sharpies that advertise in GUN DIGEST or the SHOTGUN NEWS, and even find a stock- but the tang, recoil shoulder and magazine well size will make you shake your head and say to yourself- "What the ---- did I get myself into?" Case in point-a hunting pal has an older M54 Winchester in 30-06, and he asked a top custom riflemaker in Wyoming for a price to convert it into a Pre-l964 Model 70 (bolt, trigger, safety, plus the M54, like the Springfield l903-A3- was a modified 98 Mauser action, had a solid stamped sheet steel floorplate, trigger bow and two-stage trigger- You could also take an older VW "Bug" to a custom shop and have them rebuild it into a Porsche 911 (Dr. Ferdinand Porche developed the air cooled engine concept in Germany in the l930's, so some might say a VW and a Porsche are "cousins" The other thing is, if you read Field & Stream magazine- about a year ago the shotgun writer bought a l920 vintage A.H. Fox 12 Sterlingworth shotgun from Scheels in Iowa City, then spent $1800 having it "upgraded" and then had the courage to write about it in Field & Stream- he ended his article with the accurate comment that he "Now owned a vintage American non-ejector boxlock shotgun that might be worth $1800 tops as a shooter". Words of wisdom here- I have looked at many "counterfeited" M70's over the years-Std. 24 inch barrels cut down and recrowned to 20" to pass as a M70 Carbine (only made from l937-l946 aprox.) dead giveaway is the resoldered front sight ramp, until l952 all Model 70's had the front sight ramp milled with the barrel, not soldered on- also, I've seen purported M70 Super Grades,
mfg. from l936 to l959 (with exception of the .458Win African Model)
where someone took a std. grade and set it into a used Super Grade stock- several "tell-tales" here- almost every Super Grade M70 will have the word SUPER (in Caps) stamped on the barrel underside, just ahead of the receiver, with the factory cal. and date and inspector's stamp(s)- other give-aways are found in Rule's book, over the years the checkering patterns changes somewhat on the SuperGrades, also the style of cheekpiece-I'd suggest you geta copyof Rule's book "The Rifleman's Rifle" read it throughly, then decide if you want to "upgrade your Win 670" which will always be a "counterfeit" or have me find you an honest pre-l964 30-06. The 670 isn't exactly like the 70 so making a 70 stock work on it is a pain. If you really want a long-term project then go for it. I would never do it again but that's me. 0
