Old 38 M&P pre 1958 before they put the model on the frame under the cylinder. 0 -
Remove the grips to find the correct serial number. What you are seeing are factory assembly numbers which are meaningless to us. The serial will also be on the rear of the cylinder and the underside of the barrel. Should be at least a 6 digit number.
It appears to be a Model of 1905 Military & Police (4th Change) which becomes the Model 10 in 1957 when S&W assigns numbers.
If you give the serial I can tell about when it was made. It's a pre-war gun for sure. Can tell by the shape of the hammer and the large ejector rod button.0 -

I would estimate about 1926.
Value will vary greatly based on condition. It's missing the original stocks. has it been refinished or is the original finish?

Well, if you are looking to sell you can ask whatever you want and see what happens. I'm no expert, I'm just estimating based on what I see selling.
But you have to remember that this is maybe the most popular gun ever made. S&W made something like 6 million of them so they are not rare or hard to find. In really pristine condition they will bring more from collectors, but when you don't have the original box and stocks the value plummets with collectors. Having the original finish is a huge plus but again, to really get a big dollar increase it needs to be nearly perfect.
I saw a similar gun in its original box in about 98% condition sell for $450. I recently sold a well-worn 6" example for $125. The 4" brings more and yours is in better shape so it likely falls somewhere between the 125 and 450.
But that's just my opinion.0
