Gun Question...

Ok, my cousin just called me about a gun I "might be interested in".

He was trying to describe it to me:

Said it had a collapsible buttstock, wooden stocks, had american writing on it.

He didn't have it near him when he called me but he said he was sure it wasn't an AK type rifle.

I'm thinking it might be an M1 Carbine with a Paratrooper stock on it.

It was his Dad's (my uncle by marriage) and it looks like he wants to perhaps sell it because he's always short on cash.

If it IS an M1, it's probably an original. Any idea on the price of these or any idea on what else it might be with the limited amount of information?

When I check it out in the next few days, what should I be looking for to determine a value? I'm not up-to-speed on these rifles.....

Any help is appreciated.

    A coworker is looking at the Marlin 308MX (Marlin Express). Anyone have one of these? I told him I would be a bit leary about it not based upon the manufacturer (love my Marlins) or the ammo manufacturer (Hornady is great)...I am leary based upon the fact that it is proprietary to Hornady and what the availability of the ammo is nation wide (heck even state wide) and that there are currently no reloading components out there.

    What do you guys/gals think of them if you have one.

    I'm still waiting to see if it catches on only place I've seen ammo is on the internet

    Our Academy has the ammo as does our Walmart. But I would be worried if he went to another part of the state/country to hunt and he needed to get more.

    There are times I have a hard time finding 45-70 in other states.

    Even though I am a fan of Marlins, I don't see that there is a need for the 308 Marlin. With the 336 chambered in 30/30 and 35 Rem and the 1895 chambered in 45/70 and 450 Marlin, I don't see the XLR sticking around for too long.

    Cat, I am like you. I have the 30AS (factory camo from the early 90s) in 30-30, the 336C in 35 Rem, the 1895G in 45-70 and the 1894 in 44 Mag.

    I wondered what the idea behind the 308 MX was as well. I would like to have seen them chamber the 336 in a 270 perhaps with those Hornady tipped Leverevolution rounds. I am sure the reason was they were worried someone would put solid tips in and have a chain fire.

    Heck I would even like to see them bring their 410 lever action shotgun back...I love mine for rabbit and even coyote (with slugs).

    We stock the ammo and Ive sold several of the guns. Try going in your local shop instead of Walmart and you just might find the ammo. I like the round and Hornady makes a nuce bullet for it. Will it catch on ? I really dont know . If it doesnt then you got a rare caliber ..
