Anybody read the Leatherstocking..................

Tales by James Fenimore Cooper? My favorite movie is "Last of the Mohican's" and last summer I finally bought the book and thought it was hard to read and was out of sequence to the movie but it was good. I just finished "The Deerslayer" and started "The Pathfinder" last night. "The Deerslayer" is the first in the series and I thought it was a great book. "The Pathfinder" is getting just as good. Just wondering if anyone has read these books. Maybe we ought to start a book club. Only rule......No politics!

    Read them all when I was in elementary school. Have several old copies now. Read them again periodically. I get something new every time. My favorite is The Deerslayer. My all time favorite books. Too bad we couldn't have such a noble and moral person like Natty Bumpo for our presidential candidate. Oops. No politics. Sorry. Over the years there has been several attempts to make movies of the books. None do justice to the written word though.

    I'm a writer -- love to read -- and generally agree with the idea that movies are inferior to the books they're based on.

    "The Last Of The Mohicans" could be considered inferior to the book in the sense that it follows the book VERY loosely -- to purists, changing Cooper's storyline probably borders on blasphemy. However -- I've tried on three separate occasions to read "The Last Of The Mohicans", and, all I can say is, if I never again read the phrase "though I be a man without a cross...." I will die happy. It isn't that my reading tastes are more Louis L'Amour and Penthouse Forum, though I enjoy both [:D]; I enjoy Shakespeare and "Beowulf" and other works that most people were done permanent mental damage by in high school; but I couldn't get remotely interested or invested in Cooper's writing. Enough people obviously have, throughout the years, that I fully admit it must just be me.

    I have read these. Cooper is one of my favorite authors. He was the first American novelist.

    I read them many years ago. Cooper grew up around Cooperstown, NY. In fact the town is named for his father. It is a very interesting place and worth a visit. The Baseball Hall of Fame is located there. These days Cooperstown is a tourist trap and is best visited in the off season.

    Mark Twain liked to call them the "snapped twig" series, since inevitably they involved a snapped twig before some of the action. Considering the time that they were written they were great literatue. The game of "Authors" included Cooper with Tennyson Hawthorne and Shakespeare!!
