Snow Sleds from the 1800's...... Updated Photos

Here are 2 of the oldest sleds I have from the planet Jr. company. You may remember them better as flexible flyers. These are 1890 models.

Here are some photos of them in their element. This is the first time some of these have seen snow in many many years...

bottom to top all flexible flyers...1940's racer, 1950's, 1930, 1890, 1890.

    As a young kid I had an old one of the upper models. I remember hitting a tree and driving a runner into my leg.

    I had more fun on that sled in one hour than I have in an entire year these days.

    yep, I had 1 or 2 of them things. waxed the runners and everything. they were pretty fast. those do look a lot older, but I see the design hasn't changed much.

    I first sled on one of those with my dad at age 2. Wish I could remember it.

    Dad still has it. I look forward to the day when he, I, and a little kid of my own can ride down a hill.

    My uncle has one just like the long one in the pic. We used to tie a pony to the front and let him pull us around like it was a sleigh. It really never did work out too well, but it did work great for getting back up the hill!

    Can't see the photos, but I sure remember sledding. Go over to Walnut hill, the main sledding hill in our town was about a mile from my home. The road was pretty good but the hills in the park on the south side of the street were even steeper and you could really get a ride. The park hill dipped below the level of the street then rose back up to the street, so you could get off the ground a couple of feet before landing on the street. Then, the trick was to stop before you were through the ice on the creek on the north side of the street.

    We would sled 'til dark and go home with jeans iced down the legs, and thighs red and ice burned. Somehow it does not seem like so much fun any more.
