Fish tank

I just started a new fish tank. I had one about 20 years ago and always really enjoyed it. I was talking to the lady at the pet store and she had told me alot of the fish had changed as far as their aggressiveness and how easy they die. That actually really surprised me. When I used to have my tank I had Oscars and everytime I would look sideways at them they would die. Now she says Oscars live through about anything it seems. She full of garbage or she telling the truth?

    I can't answer this but it wouldn't surprise me if she's telling the truth. Let us know what you find out.

    Lots of good information. Pay attention to the tank cycling part. test water. Change water frequently. Get a BIG tank.

    I have one Oscar in 75 gallon tank and it is too small.

    I've raised tigers, reds and cichlids in the 80's. They are tough fish that need an excellent filtration system if you feed them goldfish. I had a 5 inch tiger jump thru the rear cover once and spent the night behind the tank on the carpet. He fully recovered and lived another 3 years [:D]

    Thanks for that site Nunn I've been reading it. Lots of good info there. I have a small one now, but my wife is all into also so I'll be grabbing a 100 and some gallon tank off of craigslist next week probally because they have alot of very good deals on there.

    In my experience Oscars are prone to fungus and you cant keep other fish with them. We had 2 that growed very large then got the fungus and we treated them until they were better. Then one got it again and they both ended up dead. Now we have a 75 Gallon community tank and I truly enjoy just watching them swim around. Good Luck!!

    Are you sure it wasn't Ichthyophthirius multifilis parasites? (ick)

    My wife has THIRD GENERATION fish in our tank.And 3 babies, that's going to be FOURTH gen.I'll get some photo's, and try to have her post how she's done it.
    I can tell you, in all honesty.I HAVE NOT SEEN A SINGLE DEAD FISH,SINCE THE DAY SHE TALKED ME INTO GOING TO GET THE TANK! 1-1/2 YRS. ago.

    We bought a little oscar when I was a freshman in college. He started out the just a little larger than a quarter. Three years later he was bigger than my hand. Mean SOB would eat any living thing he could choke down. He jumped out of the tank several times and lived so I'd say he was pretty durable.

    All the Oscar's I have had were tough as nails and lived through about anything. As others have said, they do get BIG, so make sure your tank is big enough now. Not very social. If they can get their lips around another fish, they will eat it.

    I love the corner bowfronts, problem is that I have 1 corner in the whole house that would work for this and it is in the formal living room which is never used.

    Jewel cichlids are just as agressive and a whole lot cheaper and prettier[:)]

    After 40 years of keeping and breeding fish I gave it up. Oscars get over 12" in length and are tougher than bass. Anything you keep with them becomes food except things as large or plecos. Use filteration for a much larger tank, essentially treat it as a sewage disposal problem in all will work fine.

    My 90 gallon tank now contains a 4" turtle. I still have a brass framed 35 from the late '20's that I am going to put back up one day.
