Animal Husbandry Question

Animal Husbandry Question:

Dad had a prolapsed cow yesterday. We shall say the inards were hanging out her rearend.

I worked midnights and missed out on the fun, but he called the vet out. My cousin helped as he is out of work for the winter.

Cousin came down and asked my wife for some sugar. She ask how much. He said a lot.

I talked to him briefly last night while I was at work. He said he sprinkled the sugar on the vets hands as she pushed everything back into the cow. I assume the vet then sewed a few stitches in the cow to help hold everything in.

The cow also go a shot or two. I assume antibiotics.

Now here is my question.

Wouldn't sugar up the vagina promote an infection?


I don't understand the purpose.

    Sugar (or salt) is used for 2 reasons.
    1. grip
    2. it helps shrink it by drawing out the water.

    Unless the sugar is REALLY nasty no infection since it will dissolve and leak out pretty fast.

    I don't know anything about cow's but whenever a guy comes over and asks my wife for a little sugar I tend to get a little upset.[:D]

    gagirl you might want to think that salt answer. At least try it before you recommend it. It will do a fair amount of damage to mucus membranes.

    Sugar has been used for over a hundred years, though it is mostly out moded now. It does draw out the edema (remember- Osmosis--Water moves from areas of higher concentration to areas of lower concentration across a semipermeable memberane?). Enough moisture is drawn to flush the vagina. The reason jelly does not decay or grow mold is because of the high concentration of sugar. It also draws water from bacteria and mold and kills it.

    I HAVE tried it. I was prevet and was told both by our head vet/teacher AND have used both.

    Yes, I did.... I was sitting in my calc class and figured out that I wanted to be able to be home for my kid(s) more than being a vet would allow. So I got up and walked out and never looked back. I still do alot of wildlife rehab and some dog rescue( not as much as in the past) but I am happy that I didnt become a Dr and that I am in my current field. It allows me to have alot of freedom and always be there for my daughter.

    Thanks. I don't feel so stupid.

    I hater to admit it, but HeDog's logic makes some sense. The cow is doing fine. I think he plans on letting her deliver one last time. I figured just send her to market. That does mean another vet bill.

    yes after she has her calf... most likely will.....a very good cull candidate. I assume you are talking about a vaginal prolapse?

    also give a shot of everclear into the the spine in tail head will help stop them from pushing when putting prolapse back in.

    I'm just trying to imagine the situation and type of indivuals that originally that that medical use up.

    In 40 years of active "cow care" involving many prolapses, I have never heard of this. I've used some dishwashing detergent, vegetable oil a couple of times,mostly warm water hopefully with something for lubrication. I would like to know the idea behind this especially if the vet had other alternatives available.

    Calf didn't make it. Dad and my cousin pulled it out yesterday while I was at work.

    Cow will be going to market soon.
