Update On Mark
He is still in jail, but scheduled for a hearing to determine his mental competency. He doesn't have a lawyer appointed yet, but I have called the PD's office and left my number for the lawyer to call me. I can't help but believe that his mental illness will be taken into account, and I fervently hope that he will be diverted into treatment rather than punished.
I am concerned for his property. I don't have the VIN or plate number of his car, so no one can tell me where it is. The car is of no real consequence, but in that car is all his musical, electronic, and computer gear. He also has a storage building in Orange, Texas, and I am pretty sure he is behind in his rent, and not able to pay the rent in jail. If he spends some time in jail or a hospital, and then gets out to find he has lost his property, he will be devastated.
Getting straight answers out of anyone at the Maricopa County SO is nearly impossible.
The secretary at the PD's office did read me the arrest report. He apparently acquitted himself well against the first responding officer, and also against the three backup officers. I didn't know my boy had it in him, but in his altered mental state, his pain threshold was elevated, and his perceptions were off.
The last person to speak with him on the phone was his step-father, and he asked Mark to tell him his location, so he could send the police to help him. That geeked Mark out. To Mark, the police were part of an evil conspiracy to put him back in the hospital. So, when he did encounter officers, he resisted.
He had selected a piece of beef jerky in a convenience store, and ate it without paying. The clerk asked him to pay, and Mark ignored him. The clerk asked Mark to leave the store, but Mark went in the restroom and locked the door. Mark ignored the clerk's demands that he come out and leave, so the clerk called the sheriff's office.
The deputy told Mark to come out, and he still refused. The deputy went in the restroom, and the physical fight began. The fight lasted 15 minutes until backup arrived. The deputy was gouged in the eye, punched, bitten, and kicked in the abdomen and groin. The toilet was broken. Mark continued to fight even after the deputy used a TASER on him. Three additional deputies arrived and, with some difficulty, they managed to get Mark handcuffed and in a car.

I wonder if it would do any good for you to get a copy of his medical records documenting his previous troubles? (if possible)
That way you can have it ready for Marks lawyer.

Mark is an adult, and no one, not even I, can get his medical records without his written consent. HIPAA, doncha know?
I have notified the medical liaison and the public defender that he has been hospitalized and treated for his illness, and where the records are.

Where was the car registered? His name on registration? DMV should have that infomation on computer. Registration should give VIN number. M county probably has an inpound yard. I bet all his goods in car is already stolen. Storage in Orange , Texas pending how many places shouldn't be too hard to locate and probably due first of month. Usually a grace period before management can do anything with goods. Your correct on punishment. I would hope and pray the judicial system reckognises his illness. His public defender needs to get him medical help now they have knowledge you gave them of his illness . 0 -

I have a cousin who is schizophrenic so I understand how mental illness takes a toll on the entire family. I'll be sending a prayer for the whole family. 0 -
Prayers continue. See if he will tell his mom where the storage building is so the rent can get paid, and see if he will release his property in the car to her for safe keeping.

Very difficult situation. Sounds very similar to what we went through with my buddy a few years back. Once is gets stabilized in the jail, providing they can or will get him his proper meds, I would think that he will then give info and consent for family to help him. Any way to get in touch with his doctor? Thats what we had to do in order to get my friend back on his medication in the jail. Nunn I hope all works out OK for Mark. Prayers continue for him. 0 -

Have you or anyone petitioned for appointment of a conservator and/or guardian? 0 -
If his vehicle is registered in TX then have your communications tech run his name using a "QDA" mask....this will show all associated vehicles with plate numbers. Then run the plate and see where it's been impounded. Most agencies enter all abandoned and impounded vehicles in their state database.

A buddy of mines son has been in the Palm Beach County jail for 18 months, on a similar charge.He has received NO MEDICAL attention, and, as he is in a very violent state, he has been in the "HOLE"(solitary confinement) since day 1. His parents are denied visitation.The longer he is there, the more violent he becomes. He has not seen a judge, he has not been appointed any lawyer.His family is devistated!
I'm afrade he will die there, soon, and it will be the Jail's "GOON SQUAD" that kills him.
I have prayed for your son Dave, and you, and your family. I sincerely hope what has happened to my friends son, doesn't happen to your Mark.

I've had to fight a few people with mental conditions, and people in a delirious state become incredibly strong and impervious to pain. I'm sure Nunn and any other LEOs on here will tell you there's no tougher fight than the fight with person who has a delusional condition.0
