CCW Gun for Left-Handed Wife w/Small Hands
Hello everyone-
Thanks for letting me post here. I'm looking for a carry gun for my wife. She is left-handed, a beginning shooter, and has small hands. Any suggestions???
She shot my Glock 19, but had a little trouble controlling the recoil. She also noted that the trigger reach was too far for her hands, citing the length of the grip from backstrap to frontstrap (the same applies to the Glock 26). She shot the CZ 83 and Sig P232 and did alright with them. She liked the Kahr CW9 because of the slimmer grip, but it may not fit her purse very well. Would any of you guys let your wife carry a Kel-Tec .380? I kind of like the Sig P232 for her because of two very important factors: 1) the magazine release on the bottom (thus ambi), and 2) the slide releases by racking it anyway, rather than a slide release lever (thus also ambi).
I haven't considered a revolver (hammerless?) because the .38 may be a little too much for her, and also the low round count.
Any other opinions or suggestions you folks have would be much appreciated. Thanks and God bless.

My wife likes the CW9. After I got one she had to have one for herself.

As I was reading your post the first thing that popped into mind was "revolver". A good revilver does not have to be a 38, the 32 h&r or the new 327 Ruger would also work very well, a well placed shot means far more than the energy of the bullet. The great thing about a revolver is that it works when you want it to work. If the first pull of the trigger went "click" pull the trigger again. I have always loved the people that say that they would never choose a revolver due to the lack of capacity. First off are you going into a fight or trying to get out of one? If your going into a fight you need all the ammo you can carry, if you are trying to stay out of a fight and you need more than 5 shots you are in deep doodoo.0 -
They make 7 shot snub nose 357 you can shoot a low recoil 38 special Federal Hydro Shock though it.

I personally like the S&W model 327 8 shot snub-nose .357 magnum, but they're expensive at around $999 0 -
Taurus or Charter Arms make a left handed revolver called the south paw,..38sp stub nose..in 5 or 6 shot..cylinder swings out to the right, and the cyl. release is on the right also for south paws..Loko [8D]

You may not want to go revolver, but with your own words that I highlighted it spells nothing but a revolver seeing she is going from no experience in shooting directly into CCW!
I would not worry with shot capasity! If she cannot get the job done with 5 shots she maybe should not carry.
I would say go with a snub .38 with low recoil hydrashocks.0 -
My daughter is a small, lefty but additionally she has RA which limits her overall hand strength and flexibility. We have not found anything so far that answers all the requirements. She can't handle a small 9mm due to recoil and a double action revolver trigger reach and pull are excessive. At this time she is using a Taurus 94 22lr. It has the small grip needed but pull is still too much so she has to thumb cock it. With 9 shots it's better than a small 22 auto and Crimson Trace is making a laser grip for it now. Lefties using a double action revolver is not that unhandy if the right technique is used. 0 -
look at a S&W 3913,light weight single stack 9mm. ambodex safety, DOA,with decocker. i,m left handed and realy like it. eastbank. 0 -
Charter Arms Southpaw Undercover. 38 Special, snubby, airweight, made FOR a lefty. Frame about size of a S&W Mdl 36 Chief's Special. Rubber grips, rated for +P ammo. 5 rounds is enough to gain room to run, or you did a really bad job with those 5 rounds. 0 -

Have you checked into having an action job done on it?0 -
My personal carry piece a Kahr PM9. Smaller and lighter than the CW9. You also may consider the new Ruger .380 auto coming out soon. 0 -
S&W TSW 3913.... 0 -
My wife ended up with a Walther P-99. (not S&W)
Backstrap is changeable to allow for smaller hands.
Mag release is in the trigger guard, so it is ambidextrous.0 -
I just picked up a P232 also because of my limited right hand. It is not a 9mm but it is small, effective, and easy to carry. I wish I'd found a stainless but can live with blue. Tell her good choice!!! 0 -
My wife really likes her springfield emp 0 -
Last year, my wife got a S&W snubbie (j-frame .38, 1 7/8 in. bbl) with laser grips. She loves the little thing! It's for those occasions when her Kimber Compact .45 is a bit too much. Snub-nosed revolvers are excellent for lefties, and are light, compact, easy to operate, and controllable. The laser grip ws pricey, but is a nice touch for self-defense situations. I feel the .38 special is plenty adequate. 0 -
BlackRoses here...not classic...
Take her to a range where they will let you try different guns, or take her to a gun store/ gun show...let her try all the different guns for feel in her hand, the trigger reach right for her etc.....Or if you have friends with guns, see if they will let her try them...
Most important...LET HER DECIDE.....dont buy a gun for her with out letting her try it out...what you think may be right for her, may not be right for her at all...0 -
Charter Arms is making a compact 38 spc revolver called "The Southpaw." Personally, I like Charter. They make a good product and not very expensive to boot.

A very big THANK YOU to each of you for your thoughts, comments, and advice. We'll check out that Charter Arms Left handed .38, and try to find a range that rents a Kahr for her to try as well. I hadn't heard of the Charter Arms Lefty before and when I showed her the picture she seemed interested in it. I'm thinking I'll get a Sig P232 for myself anyway, and if she likes it she can take it. Is there much of a difference in recoil with the .38 vs the .38+P? I agree that the ease of operation of the revolver lends itself to her needs. Thanks again. 0 -
if she is not going to practice on a regular basis so she can get comfortable with a auto she needs a 38 lightweight , taurus, or smitm w/or w/o hammer. another nice one is the taurus 8 shot light weight 17 hmr revolver. it weighs 18 oz. and the ammo is light as well. but that is a mean ass little round - it will mess up any one of any size. cdnn has those for $219 making about 1/2 the price of the smith and $150 or so off the price of the taurus.
a revolver is adrenalin proof and more reliable0 -
also I'm a lefty and a revolver is no problem for me. 0
