DES MOINES, Iowa - Jane Hambleton has dubbed herself the "meanest mom on the planet."
After finding alcohol in her son's car, she decided to sell the car and share her 19-year-old's misdeed with everyone - by placing an ad in the local newspaper.
The ad reads: "OLDS 1999 Intrigue. Totally uncool parents who obviously don't love teenage son, selling his car. Only driven for three weeks before snoopy mom who needs to get a life found booze under front seat. $3,700/offer. Call meanest mom on the planet."
Hambleton has heard from people besides interested buyers since recently placing the ad in The Des Moines Register.
The 48-year-old from Fort Dodge says she has fielded more than 70 telephone calls from emergency room technicians, nurses, school counselors and even a Georgia man who wanted to congratulate her.
"The ad cost a fortune, but you know what? I'm telling people what happened here," Hambleton says. "I'm not just gonna put the car for resale when there's nothing wrong with it, except the driver made a dumb decision.
"It's overwhelming the number of calls I've gotten from people saying 'Thank you, it's nice to see a responsible parent.' So far there are no calls from anyone saying, 'You're really strict. You're real overboard, lady."'
The only critic is her son, who Hambleton says is "very, very unhappy" with the ad and claims the alcohol was left by a passenger.
Hambleton believes her son but has decided mercy isn't the best policy in this case. She says she set two rules when she bought the car at Thanksgiving: No booze, and always keep it locked.
The car has been sold, but Hambleton says she will continue the ad for another week - just for the feedback!

If he had been 17 I would agree. If it was her car I would agree (as may be the case). However, 19 is legally an adult and I don't see how she could sell his car nor should she- he is no longer her responsibility and while this will embarrass him, I don't think it will correct his 'problem'. Nor would I bet money on his having a problem other than being young and stupid. 0 -

Some people honestly believe that drinking and driving causes deaths.
despite the fact that he's 19, I would guess that his mother is still interested in saving his life, or the lives of the ones he might kill.0 -
That is a good mother. I love the kid's excuse, "It wasn't my booze, it belonged to a friend."
Gee a teen age punk wouldn't disobey his mom, and then lie to her, would he?
If more mothers would be as responsible as this it would cut down on business for the Paramedics.0 -

I love this lady! At 19, the kid should move out of the house anyway, get work, and buy his own car and insurance. She bought him the car, there was an understanding about alcohol, and he blew it.
He**, I'm a 58 year old grandfather, and that's about what my truck is worth! There are so many Spoiled Brats out there, who think they are entitled to a vehicle and a degree from Mommy and Daddy (or the gov't). They should quit whining, join the Army, and see how the world really lives (e.g. Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.).0 -
If it was in his name.. then he could do what he liked with the car....
she bought it and made the rules... I dont care if he was 40.. if he lives with mom/dad then they can make the rules!

Dont know about your state. But 21 is the legal drinking age in WV.
Next if I had a kid living at home, No matter what their age may be. They will live under my rules.

If she bought it, and he's still living at mommy's house, he's under mommy's rules. He's not really grown until he's out on his own support himself 100%0 -

I don't drink, and this is another reason why I bought my first car at 17.
Lived at home got grounded for something, they said I could not go anywhere and hand over the keys. I replied I wont go anywhere but your not getting the keys. I paid for that car and its in my name only. i paid $350 for it in 1974.
i never asked or got any hand outs from my parents moved out at 18 bought first house at 21. seems like kids now days think it is a right of passage is to suck all the life & money out of us before we die. cant get some to move out no matter how much you tick them off.
Not like the old days, parents would start in on you so you would just fly the nest.

My house, my rules! Be it 10, 19, or 40.
He, at least, could have been more creative. Ran out of window washer solvent and substituted vodka. Or experimenting with ethanol blends in his gas tank.
Lucky for him there will be other days and other cars... And he'll look back in a few years and appreciate a mother who cared enough to say no.0
