Happy Lee-Jackson day !


For those not from Virginia, the day now designated as MLK day had been a state holiday in Virginia, known as Lee-Jackson day for many years. After MLK day was designated as a Federal holiday, for several years it was referred to as Lee-Jackson-King day. Some folks were not real pleased about the combination, and raised a little ruckus. To appease everyone, the designated the Friday prior to MLK day as Lee-Jackson day, and made a 4 day weekend out of it.

    Wish I had saved some of the calendars from my childhood, which listed Monday as Confederate Memorial Day.

    I don't mind a MLK day, he deserves it.
    But I would sure like to see a Lee-Jackson day here in North Carolina.

    I can remember when I was a kid growing up in Atlanta in the fifties. Back then Atlanta was still a Southern city.
    Every year these gals from the United Daughters of the Confederacy would come down to the school to prepare us for our essay. Every kid in the school had to write an essay on the subject for that year. I remember one year it was Fort Sumter. Another year, we had to write a biography of General Jackson. Now this was a public school.
    It was a big deal to write the best essay. The whole school met in the cafeteria and four or five UDC gals presented the winner with a prize.

    The Daugheters of the Confederancy still hold there writing contest every year in Virginia.

    They used to come to my school every year and help kids write essays or the contest.

    Yep, that's the way it was, but some of us are a little slow catching up. [:D]

    Can't believe how they're whitewashing that horhoppin communist MLK in this pre election campaign.
    No credit is due Johnson for the Civil Rights Act of 1964. He was only the U.S. President; an accessory to the fact.
    The Libs rewrote history in Paul Robeson's case too.
