ROTOTILLER QUESTION

OK, so what is the intended function of the vertical bar on the back of a front-tine rototiller? I have heard it is to slow down the rototiller and make it dig more deeply and thoroughly. I have also heard it controls the depth of the tilling. All I know is it makes it super freaking difficult to move the thing over to where you need to use it.

    Yesterday I bought a old SEARS/CRAFTSMAN rototiller.I want to get some tuneup stuff for it,but I can't ID the motor.Sears has been no help.This thing was made in the mid 1970's.The rototiller is Sears model #917.299660 and it has the six HP motor on it.Who made the motor ?

    Go to sears.com and then parts and put that number in, it gives a lot of info on it.

    I have a similar but different problem. I have and old Sears rototiller, and cannot get new tines. So just today I went and bought 20' of mild steel bar to make some.

    My rototiller was made in 1972, and it has a B&S 5 hp motor.

    Once again Sears was no help.Too old to be in their computer files.

    Is the fuel tank attached to the carb, or is it on top of the motor?

    Just take off the parts you need and go to Tractor Sales or Farm & Fleet or some other store like that and they will know either by looking at them or matching them up. Work for me on an old rototiller from my neighbor.[:)]

    The fuel tank is on the other side of the engine from the carb.It hangs on the side of the engine and looks like a paper one gallon milk carton laying on it's side.The engine has a mechanical fuel pump.The tank is made of plastic.I just found the name LAUSON on the bottom of the carb.

    my old tiller went kaplooey...the motor is fine but the gears are locked up and too old to replace.

    anyone got an old tiller that needs a side shaft B&H 5hp?

    dcon is right it's a Tecumseh. Pull the starter housing, the model and serial should be stamped in the housing, or tagged on it. Most older models are stamped, and hard to read.[8D]

    Yep,it's a Tecumseh model 143.It appears to be very well built.I have another rototiller to look at in the morning.It has a 4 hp BS motor on it.Have a couple of pot belly woodstoves to look at also.
