work story
Teacher got fired today. Doing a bad job, abusing the leave policy, possibly faking an injury to get off work, pi$$ing everybody off. Didn't get fired as such, but they brought her in and had the big guns from HR there and told her she could leave today and would get a confirmation of employment recommendation, or she could stick around to the end of the year and they would trash her on her evaluation, bar her from ever working for the county again, and would badmouth her to all future employers.
A friend who was in the room said it was something else. They brought her in, sat her down, had all the papers printed out and told her she had five minutes to decide to sign or they would rescind the offer. She had gotten a bad mid-year evaluation but didn't know this was coming. She sat there for a minute and looked around like "Are you serious?" and then burst into tears, and then signed and was escorted from the building.
I have a good buddy who is a labor and employment lawyer, and he spends about a third of his time at work firing people. Half he says totally have it coming, and half are good employees in a bad economy or whose skills are no longer needed or whatever. Funny thing is, he says even when the guy totally has it coming it's still hard to see.

I was in a similar situation about 10 years ago when my African American supervisor marched me up to the HR officers office. She said they would leave so much bad info on my employment record I would never be able to work in this city again. I ended up getting terminated. Little did they know I was carrying a small tape recorder and taped the whole event. My lawyer sued them for slander and libel and they offered $50K right off the bat. 0 -

This woman surely had it coming, and I'm sure the HR people were 100% legal and fair in what they did to her.
I can't imagine for myself coming home one day and suddenly having no way to pay the mortgage or put food on the table. It must be a horrible thing. A couple years ago one of the teachers got a DUI and lied to the school system about it. She'd gone to court and the judge made a condition of her sentence the notification of the school system. She made up a cock and bull story and told the principal, but the court called to check up on it and she was caught in a lie.
The had her "retire" the next day. She had 27 years with the county, and they put her name on the sign out front thanking her for her service and tried to hush up the DUI, but she was gone like that.0
