The only thing those of us who have been on those "multiple tours" can truly count on is that there will be multiple other tours to come. These multiple 12 to 15 month tours exact a terrible toll on both soldiers and their family.
The rest of these turds need to reach down, grab a pair, and join the damn fight.
This is infuriating!!!
NCOs and Officers who have yet to deploy should be given the choice of destination for their packed bags, OEF/OIF, or the living room as a damn civilian where they can collect their welfare check without robbing their fellow soldiers.

Now, an Army check has found about 40 percent of 515,000 active-duty soldiers have not yet set foot in a combat zone even as the wars stretch into their fifth and sixth years, with some soldiers having served up to five tours.
The check showed that some of the soldiers who have not served in a war zone are scheduled to deploy in the near future but that at least 37,000 other troops have no reason for their lack of war duty and should start packing.

There was a time when 15 months was a drop in the bucket.. Not until Vietnam did they start the short tours in a combat zone..[:0] 0 -
I am willing to bet that of those 66,000 leathernecks and 515,000 active-duty Army.

I hear ya, but there was an end in sight during WWII (at least for those fella's who survived).
I'll also tell you that as I stand here today I believe that soldiers who volunter to SERVE their country during this critical time in our history as a Nation, can reasonably expect to be at war for their entire career.
Is it unreasonable to expect others in the crowd to help bear the load?

Why do some guys get stuck for multi-tours and some not even go? Does the army and marines not know where troops are located and who has been where?
If we closed the military bases in Korea and Germany I bet it would free up a lot of troops for duty in the sandbox.0 -
I'm sure quite a few of these soldiers/marines have not had the opportunity to deploy. I would imagine that there are quite a few units that have not seen the battlefield...wouldn't this be more a scheduling/planning problem on the part of the Pentagon...or whoever coordinates these things???...rather than the individual soldiers???
I do understand that a soldier can request to be deployed though...that is exactly what I did during Gulf War 1. I asked to be sent and was attached to another unit to go.0 -

I'll give you that, some units have not deployed, for whatever reason, but.....
we've been at war for nearly 7 years, so EVERY soldier has PCS'd no less than 1-2 times. There is NO WAY you can convince me that a soldier who has not deployed has ended up in this unique situation on accident. It can't happen in today's Army.. period.0 -
There is a difference between trafficking information and fostering an agenda. Your complaint is not with individual soldiers for not stepping up, but with the Defense Department and the departments of Personnel for the Army and Navy. Military units and individual soldiers go into and out of combat zones not by choice but by order. And who cuts these orders?

I wonder what percentage of these numbers were transitioning in or out of the service during this time period...that coupled with where they were stationed, might account for some of the discrepancy...but 40% is an awfully high number. 0 -
