RELOCATE...HAVE YOU?
Thinking about relocating to diff state...Im in ohio and in my city things are in decline at a rapid pace. Jeep cut off third shift(i dint work there but) and people are leaving left and right. Im thinking of going west. I know things are not good in a lot of places but...its nasty here. I have kids and want to let them have a chance...should i go for it?..i got the money to move and an ok reserve...Im affraid because ive been here my whole life..but i have to think 10yrs down the road...have any of you takin that plunge?

do you own a house? If so, what is it worth, and can you get what you want, or need to pay it off?
where you are thinking of moving to, is the housing affordable?
what kind of job/skills do you have?
is the area you are thinking of moving to have jobs in your skill level??
are the wages comparable??
do you have family (older parent/parents/in-laws) that might be counting on you being around?
what does your wife think?

Not till the folks pass. I live in an area that once you leave, financially it's almost impossible to return unless you have Big $$$.0 -

I moved to SE Indiana from Arizona twelve or so years ago. Even with having gotten divorced a year ago, it's the best thing I've ever done. I sometimes could stand not to be 1600 miles from my dad and mom (and brother and two sisters) but, in balance, the insanity of my family at the time was one of the major reasons for moving when my wife wanted to be closer to her folks. Much of the insanity hasn't changed, so, all in all....
I have to say that I didn't and don't have kids. My wife and I both had/have an assortment of what you might call lower-level job skills that made it a pretty sure thing we'd find work -- and both of us ended up in jobs we like, after putting in some time doing stuff we didn't much care for. I would have to second the suggestion that you ask yourself the questions that PBJloaf posed. Hopes for something better need to be measured against the possibilities and realities of the situation.
It's great that you're willing to admit being scared, but for the sake of your kids to look past the fact that you've lived where you are your whole life. I know a number of people who make it very plain that their kids will NOT have better or simply different lives than what they've got, and are insulted by any suggestion that it should be otherwise.0 -

Take a 4 or 5 hour drive to Bowling Green Ky.
Lots of work cheap living if you stay out of town or in a small town close by.

Lived in CA for 38 years--moved to WA last may and it was the best thing I've ever done. Cleaner air-very sportsman friendly(so far) easy CCW laws-friendly people-some areas are very reasonable to live in-some not(like bellevue or seattle proper) There are many small towns and plenty of bigger cites and of course there are areas out in the country. And no state income tax[:D] 0 -
I know it's not the same, but in the military I moved 7 times

Well I like Oregon but would not move here. Thinking Idaho or Northern Nevada if I was to move again.
This time would be because I want to live there and a job is not needed. Thats were Oregon is not doing well. Plus to many Californians are moving here. Bringing their Ideas from the south.0 -
I think you're thinking right, but you might want to do it the other way around. Find your work/career first, then move. It's a lot easier to get your next job while you are employed than it is while you are unemployed. Check out the place you are thinking about moving to before you move. It's expensive to check out many places, but not as expensive as moving and finding out you won't live there.
Can you stand to live away from friends and family? My late brother-in-law moved to Florida from North Carolina for a better job in the 1970s, but had to move back because he was "home sick". I know it sounds silly, but it's something to think about. I have relocated twenty times since I was seventeen years old without major problems, but different people have different needs and priorities.

Ocala Florida may be a good spot for you ti take a look at. What's your profession? Lots of construction, wich = lots of associated trades.
Still some descent real estate deals available, but act fast.I live in Palm Beach County, have since '78. Stil lots of work, but the prop. taxes are the highest or close to it, in the nation. People in general,SUCK! Lots of retired Jews/New-Yorkers and just plain the worst drivers anywhere!!! I will warn you tho. IT GETS HOTTER THAN THE BOWELS OF HELL,IN OCALA!!! But, no worse than ORLANDHELL!!0 -
I lived in Quebec City for 10 years and then was transfered to Moncton, NB for the next 17 years and then to the Boston area (for the last 5 years). I'm heading back to Canada in retirement in a couple years. I find that there are nice folks everywhere! 0 -

Consider moving to Tupelo, crime is almost non-existent. You can still buy a nice house in the country with 15 acres under $125K. Gun laws are one of the slackest in the USA. Toyota is building a 2 Billion dollar plant here with billions more in supplier sites.
The dollar goes far and the pay scale is going up [:D]0 -
Washington/Oregon to California, to Florida, now in Texas.
Now that I'm getting old the biggest change is moving away from friends, and meeting new people.
I will likely move again, or even a few more times, depends on the OPPORTUNITY. I will never become a slave to a company, mortage, etc.
