Went Mon. night, very disappointed. Box Office reported 28 mil opening weekend. Showed very little footage from Desert Storm. Very let down by Jarhead

Firearms related content: You will see a lot of weaponry used in this film. I came away from the film feeling ambivalent. I regard anyone who has been within the sound of guns firing in anger to have been in a war. How long the war lasted means nothing. The trooper in the war saw the elephant and is no less blooded, then were the troops who spent months on the line in Europe or the Pacific during WWII or in Korea during that War, or during a year's tour of the Vietnam War. I have to also state that the average soldier of today can stand against any previous US Grunt and not come up short, in terms of bravery and willingness to close with the enemy and emerge victorious.
The first thing about the film, by which I was turned off, was the too familiar treatment of Boot Camp. The DI screams the same tired curses, denigrating the "maggot" recruit. Anyone over 20 has to have seen the Basic Training drill in countless war movies. This one told us nothing different or new. For anyone who served, the setting was familiar and perhaps a bit uncomfortable to again witness. For those who did not serve, Hollywood showed the same thing in Full Metal Jacket with only a slight change in the BDU.
The scenes of the waiting for war in Saudi also created no shock effect for anyone who followed Desert Shield and/or knew someone over there. Young virile men too long penned up are pretty gross characters.
Once the battle was joined, no one with half a brain would want to take part in the sort of war depicted. But then we have to look at the average Jarhead recruit to realize that having half a brain qualifies him for Boot Camp. <8^)) It was also sad to think about the fact that the vast majority of recruits are taken from the ranks of not-quite-out-of-childhood-rock-n-rollers who are filled with the mythical, false sense of having a chance to grasp at glory. In reality the glory was never found in the foxhole. I have long stated that the Gov'mt must grab very young men of 18, in order to mold them into troops who will charge uphill at entrenched machine guns. After 18, for most, it is too late and when asked to charge into machine guns, they would likely reply: "Wait a minute! I have my check book with me! Let me talk to those guys on the hill and maybe I can lease it for a while!" The same thoughts come to mind, watching Jarhead. "How far away is the international airport? What we are doing is insane!"
Visual effects on the battlefield were very well done. Warthogs strafing appeared scary, even though they were on our side. Whoops maybe in the one scene, they were not on our side. The way that Officers are depicted?....Well they are Officers.
If you have not seen the last twenty five war movies released by Hollywood, go see Jarhead. If, like me, you did see those films go anyway, your mileage may not match my own.

Went to see jarhead yesterday,walked out halfway thru it was garbage.Anyone else think the same.

It was ok, a lot of ... rated "R" happening.. and kind of confusing, but all in all it was worth the 8.00 i paid for it.0 -

i loved it! i know a lot of the old leathernecks didn't recognize their beloved corps, but truth is, it was pretty accurate to how marines are now. at least in my experience. it also followed the book pretty closely.

I did not know it was mentioned in the movie. Crotch was Marinespeak in the 1950-60 era, mostly. The terms you use here were most likely spinoffs from it. Anyway, you know what I mean. [:D]0
