RIP Baby Girl

7 hours ago we had to put our little 8 year old poodle to sleep. She had been struggling with cushings and congestive heart disease for the last 4 years. She took a turn for the worst Monday night and couldn't breath well. The vet has did his best and had her on oxygen and meds to no avail. My wife held her in her arms as they administered the sleep drug. She brought alot of good times in our lives and was pampered with our love. And they say grown men dont cry?

    My condolences to you and your wife Zebra. What an adorable little girl. What was her name? If you lost a close member of your immediate family, whom you loved dearly, and you didn't cry and mourn I would wonder what's wrong with you. We had to put our 16 year old boy Harley down two years ago. It was, frankly, awful, and it took a long time before a day went by without tears for both my wife and myself. Thankfully we had two other dogs in the house who were a big source of comfort.

    I'm not sure if you already have another dog but I have come to appreciate the advice of James Herriot who recommends that dog people get another dog as soon as possible after they lose one. It won't take away the sadness but it makes the healing easier, like Neosporin for the heard. As he puts it our pets succeed, but do not replace, each other. I also have come to think that our pets move on after being with us because they know that another pet needs a home and a chance to know what a loving family is. I can think of no greater way to honor the memory of a close friend than to save a life in their name.

    I am sorry for your loss. Feel comforted that you did the right thing and cherish the memories. It is never easy, but as Doug said, she will be waiting for you.

    I feel bad for your loss, but i trust you did the right thing. It would have been far worse to let the little sweeety suffer any farther pain.
    I so dread the day i am going to have to make that same decision, about our little Cricket.

    I wish there were any words in this world that would help and there are not. Just know that she will live on in your memory and you have friends here with tears in their eyes, because they too have lost precious family members. So very sorry for your loss.

    After losing My Idger, I can trully say this, there ain't ten people that I miss more!!!
    If you haven't lost a beloved pet...believe me it can be as much as you can bear...quite possibly more...
    Zebra, my heart goes out to you and yours... Who ever said grown men don't cry, never met a good one, that's for sure!

    I not only cried like a baby when they had to put my 6 year old chocolate lab down about 4 years ago, I cried again the first time I went back to this vet's office to pickup my mom in law's lap dog from grooming appointment, realizing I had not been there since Jimbo went down. It's a strange thing how those little muts capture our hearts and we don't even know how deeply they sink those claws into our hearts.

    Sorry for your loss, hope you have better luck dealing with whether or not to get another...... been 4 years and I still don't want another dog.

    Zebra,..the wife and I send out our condolences..that is tough on anyone,you will miss your baby for sure,..it never gets any easier,although time helps and the addition of a new buddy when you all are ready,..hope your days don't seem to empty with out her,..best..Loko [:(]

    I'm a Viet Nam vet, seen alot of "stuff", and thought I was tough, but when I had to put my Siamese cat to sleep in my arms (Feline leukemia) the tears rolled! ...I feel your lost!

    Sorry for your loss Zebra, I have a Bulldog and a Rottweiler. They are a large part of our family. I know exactly how you feel. Hang in there.

    Sorry for your loss, I know how hard it is.

    Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

    When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
    There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
    There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

    All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
    The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

    They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

    You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

    Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

    I had my beloved little beagle killed by a turkey hunter 4 years ago.
    I have still not gotten over it.
    To this day I cannot speak my dog's name.

    There is a death warrant out for the killer of my friend but he has done a good job of keeping his mouth shut.
