Ruger #3 acquisitions

A couple of weeks ago I bought a Ruger #3 on GB. It was a 22 Hornet, 1974 mfg. It came with a Leupold 6.5-20x40AO scope. Paid $600. Got that rifle on Friday. Friday night a friend of mine said he picked up a #3 in 223. Was I intersted. Told him I was low on cash and if he would work a trade. Wound up swapping the scope from the 22 Hornet and a Mossberg 500A shotgun for the 223. Also, Friday night the person I bought the 22 hornet from, asked if I was interested in a #3 in .375 Winchester. I made what I thought was a "fair to me offer" and and she excepted. Bottom line is that 2 weeks ago, I had no #3's and now I have 2 with one on the way. Total outlay was $1200 for all three. I think I did O.K. By the way, the 2 that I have received are in 98% or better condition.[:)]

    I always like the #3 better than the 1. So 30-40 and 45-70 to go? And yes you made out like a bandit.

    The strange thing is that I have been looking for a 30-40 Krag. Maybe I will try to trade one of these for a 30-40.[:)]

    I seen a guy at a range, shooting a # 3 in 45-70, with factory ammo from a bench. I know it was commercial ammo, because he wasn't a reloader. You talk about a grown man crying, I almost felt sorry for him. Closest thing to that, I ever saw. Was a guy from work who had a Remington Model 600 in 350 Rem. Mag. His shoulder area look like somebody had beat him with a baseball bat. Personally when I shoot a centerfire, I'll stick with the 6.5 Swede.

    heliman,i hope you enjoy your single shot rifles,i know i enjoy mine. i have a ruger#3 in 45-70 and a browning 78 in 45-70 and a browning 78 in 30-06,just got a winchester 1885 SR carbine in 45-70 and a browning 1885 in 260 rem. the 45-70,s will kick the hell out of you if you load then hot, but i shoot cast bullets at a modest speed. the browning 78 in 30-06 i load with cast bullets at 30-40 krag speeds. to say i like single shot rifles would be a under statment. eastbank.

    I also have 4 #1's, which I enjoy shooting. The #3's will be fun also.[:D]

    heliman, i,ve been temped to restock a number three in a nice figured walnut stock like the new winchester low wall,s have. nice and trim with checkering. eastbank.

    I have a # 3 in 44 mag. Picked it up at an auction for $350. Dang nice shooting gun. There was a # 1 that was beautiful but it was in 458. It has been awhile since an elephant was seen roaming the plains of Il so I let it pass at $575.

    My #3 is in 45/70 & yes it does hurt. The stock design is the problem I believe. The same loads in my trapdoor & my Thompson Contender are no problem.
    The real pain begins with the handloads you can stuff in the #3.
    I only use lead bullets for the trapdoor & the Thompson Contender to be sure I keep them seperate.
