I've heard it's absordly high. Thermalcouples at work have a platnium wire that is recyled. A furnace was shut down about 4 years ago. Most of the T/C's disappeared very quickly. Last month I noticed there are still two in the floor. I must admit, it was tempting.

Jeez, Capt, how big are your thermocouples? I thought one of the advantages of them was that you could have a very small (=fast responding) sensor? Anyway, I've never seen one that was more than a few inches of very fine-gauge wire.

We shall see what happens today. Dollar going down, Euro going up. I wonder if commodities are going up in other paper currencies?

further proof that wedding rings dont need to be made of precious metal and stones.

the ring itself should symbolize what is important not how much its worth.

my theory the more expesive the rock the more likely a divorce is a few years away

They are stealing catalytic convertors off new cars over here for the platinum.

I poo you not. One guy has a fleet of vehicles and found them all one day to be very loud when they start.

To think, I always thru those things away.[xx(]

Stealing catalytic converters is common here along with breaking into homes and cutting out copper pipes.

It's about three foot long with a platnium wire down the center.

Type R or Type S. reads 2500 degrees. It's only 1 inch into the glass, the rest is through brick.

Engelhard had some good info, but BASF screwed that up.

It's not the Platinum their after (not that they are going to toss that away either), those sound like Platinum-Rhodium thermocouples, and at $7400/troy oz it dosn't take much Rh to put a couple hundred bucks into the beer fund.
And than there is the Inconal sheath material to consider

The run up in metals prices is astonding. This has been going on for about 4 years now. I'm sure it will end sometime but I don't see an end in sight. There doesn't seem to be much speculation in the price of platinum.

I'd say that's because the initial investment is too steep for most folks. Besides, a lot of these newly minted gold bugs are probably in it for the short term, so the idea of putting a lot in now for something like platinum for the long term is foreign to them.

very true--the reason is newer cars with OBD2 rated cats have higher concentrations of platinum, palladium and rhodium in them--i sell cats to muffler shops for a living--so this has been happening all over.

Regarding gold: Gold has only reached "new all-time highs" if you look at it in non-inflation-adjusted dollars.

Adjusted for inflation, gold will have to exceed $2000/oz before it reaches the highs it reached in the early 1980s.

I think we'll get there on gold.

Platinum's price is driven to a greater degree by industrial demand; a serious slow-down in the economy and I could see it pulling back, though new "investor demand" could keep the platinum group metals prices high even during a general economic slow-down.

The PT market must be very thin and volatile. If it goes over $2000 it might be time to sell some and buy Gold with th money.

I hate you. You guys are making it very tempting to "find" some platnium that is doing nothing but minding its own business.

Go AG GO!! Several years ago, I bought a 100oz bar of Englehard silver. Don't remember what i paid for it but if silver ever hits 40 bucks an oz again, I MAY break even. Thank goodness I did not invest in 800 dollar gold! Tom

Mex silver is typically 90% pure. Not even sterling [92.5%].

Still, it's better than a poke in the eye.

Those of us in the PM market know the daily price, the rest really do not care, so why do you feel the need to post this everyday.
