Cortisone shots? Will they work?
I've had Cortisone shots for the arthritis in my shoulders, and they've done wonders for the pain. Does anyone know if they will help with cracked ribs? If so, I'm going to ask the doctor to do it tomorrow!

mom had broken ribs from a car accident and as best I remember NOTHING helps and she tried all kinds of meds. It sucks but you just have to wait out the pain[V] 0 -
If I am Right Cortisone works in Joints. like you shoulder worked great in Mine that where they injected it right into the joint. hurt like H!ll going in and for about another day. The the pain went away.
Kind of like injecting a lube into a squeeky bearing.0 -

for cracked ribs I would ask the Doc for a shot of Morphine[:D] 0 -
Cortisone is a corticosteroid anti-inflamatory drug rather than an analgesic. It's onset of action is rather slow, but will last for days.
Depomedrol works rather well on chronic pain when injected intra-articularly, however, for acute pain such as the one you currently experience, other medications may be better suited.
Have you tried non habit forming Ultracet?

it does fight inflammation, but in your case it wont be very effective. cortisone is effective when inflammation the the pricipal problem. your principal problem is fractured ribs. different ball game all together. your treatment yould include rest, minimal movement of the affected side and analgesia. you can start with tylenol or aspirin but it likely wont help. you will probably need something quite a bit stonger to relieve your pain. tramadol for a non narcotic, vicodin or percocet for a narcotic.
they used to bind fractured ribs in an attempt to splint them. then they realized that just about everybody they did this too got pneumonia.0 -

Pain meds are the only thing that'll help you, that and time. Broken bones? I'd go with Vicoden (sp?). Keep it to a low dose so the pain just barely goes away, and don't over do it. You don't want to go through an opiate withdrawal. 0 -
Sorry but no- Best thing the doc did for me was put me in a rib wrap to keep things from moving around to much. Like I said for me it took about 3 weeks to heal. 0 -

I suffered for weeks with a herniated disc some years ago and had decided on surgery,,,, until I met with the surgeon.
He referred me to a pain management clinic.
On my way to the clinic, I had to ride in the back of the van with the seats folded down and could hardly stand the pain of the trip, even after LARGE doses of Vicodin.
I was given one injection of a cortisone derivative and when I left the clinic 2 hours later, could have gone dancing.
Never had a problem with the disc ever again.
I understand that a disc will either heal itself or it wont and that the injection only fought the inflamation while the natural healing took place, but the relief was immediate in my case.
Maybe they mixed some sort of an analgesic with the anti-inflammatory injection?

I've had broken ribs and cracked ribs.
Some will say broken ribs actually hurt less than cracked ribs.
I call BS on that!
They both hurt like hades and only time and good pain meds offer any real relief.

Cortisone injections are for inflamed areas not for pain.Doctors will generally use cortisone in a specific area no more than 3 times
because the skin,muscle will atrophy.You can buy over the counter analgesics such as advil that helps with swelling.If you need more go see your Doctor and he will give you something for pain.Make sure
you don't mix over counter drugs with prescribed drugs unless you ask

...Ive had those and steroid shots in many different joints, after breaks, tears, etc. all in the hopes of "greasing" up the joint, promoting healing, which in turn would help the pain and maybe avoid pain pills....with no good results; well, I take that back, the docs did make a big chunk of jingle for the treatments. I gave up on all the shots, didn't work and I HATE bleening needles anyway...[^]

...[:D][:D]..taking them little shallow breaths are ya? I know, I know...last time I broke ribs I broke 7...slept sitting up for I don't know how long because I would choke if I laid flat. Doc should wrap you in a really tight elastic thingy, helps some. Only thing that helps is to buck up and bear it, ribs get well pretty quick, 'fore you know it Dheff! Get better soon bud...[^] 0 -
I broke a couple when I was fishing in Alaska.
Only thing I found that helped was to quit breathing.
Not a very good option, though.

dheff: go into your liquor locker, and set out the bottles that have the highest proof, followed by the lesser ones, followed by the still lesser ones, etc. You should end up with around thirty bottles - use only full ones - then, empty one a day. you'll be pain-free the whole time, and you will rotate your stock - double benefits! 0 -
Cracked ribs...I highly doubt it.

Had cortisone shot into my knee and it really worked. No pain from the injection. The next day I was ready to tap dance. I doubt that it would work on a broken rib. They can't use cortisone very often as it impairs the immune system.

Cortisone shots work but only because they hurt so much you can't feel the original pain. Tried them for bone spurs in my foot & no way will I do that again. 0
