It's not bad, except for the unnecessarily long opera space station docking scene. 0 -
A great film and the stand off and conversation between Dave and HAL when Dave is in outside the spacehip in the shuttle is simply a classic. Dave's emergency entry into the ship through the unpressurized service bay without his space helmet is actually quite possible, at least from an engineering standpoint. Despite often repeated space-hype, his blood would not boil nor would he freeze solid. 0 -
More has been written about this movie than any other in film history. ANY other.
"Dated"? Why? Because there are no light sabers or Wookies?
2001 is not a space movie, anyway. It is arguably the most intelligent religious film ever made.0 -
No I'd say it's dated because it belongs to a style of film-making that you'd never see today. Those long, silent shots just don't happen any more. The Conversation is also a great movie, but it's also dated in terms of cinematic style. That doesn't make either of them any less of a movie. And I believe you when you say that more's been written about 2001 than about any other movie. It'll be a staple of film history classes forever.
All that aside, I haven't seen it for years, but I remember enjoying it.0 -

Saying 2001 is slow is like saying Van Gogh uses too much blue. I think you're confusing what your attention span will allow vs what Kubrick determined is necessary and sufficient attention.0 -

I enjoyed it in 1968. Didn't understand it then but liked the smart monkeys.

I saw it at the Roxy theatre in Pacific Beach when it first came out, I liked it but was too young to grasp most of it. I liked Clock Work Orange better[:D] 0 -

A great film.
We saw it at the theater in downtown Atlanta in 1969. Nothing like watching that light show at the end while in an "altered state."

Given that the film was made forty years ago, I can easily overlook the "dated" parts. I enjoy looking back on some of the obviously 60's styles. Sort of like looking back at the 20's in the 60's.
I'm still amazed at the movie overall. What was predicted correctly, what was anticipated and hasn't yet happened, and where there was a total lack of foresight.
A telephone booth on a spaceship in 2001? How about a film camera? The lack of a PC or laptop on a receptionist's desk? Interesting for what was not envisioned.
HAL? He may be close, but he's not here even in 2008. Probably a good thing. Who in 1968 would have thought that HAL's entire memory could likely be implanted on a microchip rather than in a huge room? But voice or fingerprint recognition? Common today.
The moon base? Still an interesting concept. Manned travel beyond Mars? Impractical at best. Fact is, travel to Mars is impractical but technically possible in 2008.
Religion? I'm not sure about exactly where the film stands on religion. Isn't the film more about questions than answers?
Certainly religion is part of total as we're led first to the Dawn of Man and finally end with the creation of new life. It appears to me that the film takes a fine line between evolution and creation and I'm not too sure that I much disagree.
All in all a timeless theme. A great movie that I still appreciate forty years after it was released. The long silent parts give one time to think. Sort of a foreign concept today.0 -

I liked the silent parts of 2001. People seem to forget that space is, by definition, TOTALLY SILENT.
The thing I found laughable was Hal. That's probably because I work in computers, though. Hey, know that cheap laptop you got rid of because you couldn't upgrade it past Windows 95? Yeah, that laptop was MANY TIMES MORE POWERFUL than Hal. Now, imagine that computer getting intelligence and trying to kill you.
And I'm sorry, but Bowman becoming a 'space baby' was just flat out gay.
2010 was faitly good.
I also read "2064" (I think it was the title) which was the sequel to 2010. I didn't much care for it though, as I could start seeing where Clark's problems were. The people involved and their actions were becomming increasingly unbelieveable.
The main reason for this, I think, is that Clark's philosophy had something to do with the more technologically advanced we become, the more civilized and 'better' we become. His philosophy is shown very well in "3001", the final book.
This idea was also very popular toward the close of the 1800s. Many of its believers were disillusioned by WWI.0 -

I was pulling for the Apeman with the Bone to win the Oscar that year. He didn't. The rumor is he resorted to alcohol, became a drunk, moved back to Africa where he was captured by some natives (who thought he was a common monkey) and eaten. Sad, very sad. 0 -
Saw this film for the first time in the base theater at Tan Son Nhut. It was standing room only and the pot smoke was so thick that everybody had to be buzzed. The power went off for a couple of minutes during the "light show" and there was almost a riot. Pretty amazing for its time. 0 -

I thought the special effects were great, and the scene of Dave running while the space station revolved was great...Pan Am..long gone, along with the Bell System...who woulda thunk it??
