Mossberg Bolt-Actions
This is a tribute to the 185 Mossberg.I have a 185d and dc model.I own higher end shotguns and use them for wing shooting but the facination with the simple bolt action Mossbergs began when i was a kid.Shot my first squirrel with Dads 183 410.My older Brother hunted with a Mossberg 285{newer version 20ga}that he still uses,so i guess its a family tradition.Looking for a rabbit gun i bought these two shotguns on GB.The 185d was manufactured from 1947-50 and when disassembling to clean was surprised to find some color casehardened internal parts in the bolt assembly.The 185dc manufactured 1955-59 is basically the same gun with a redesigned bolt.These shotguns are lightweight at 5.5 lbs. due to lack of moving mechanical parts and aim more like a rifle.My friends use pumps and i have myself but feel bulky by design.My two models have the external screw on chokes,the C-Lect choke models shoot a good pattern but block a small bit of your field of view on long shots on fast moving game.If your used to shooting a bolt rifle follow up shots are not far behind a pump.Old guns such as these shoot the 2 3/4 shells only.It is my recommendation to NOT attempt to use these old Shotguns for a slug gun, even without the choke on due to age.I doubt their designed for it.I dont know when slug ammo came out so maybe somebody who remembers can fill us in.Mossberg manufactured some of these shotguns for New Haven.Chokes are getting harder to find but i believe you can now get new manufactured magazines.Also new unfinished stocks are sold Havlin sales.Hope you Mossberg enthusiasts enjoyed the article,Cahas

You,ve taken great care of it,from the pic looks like its retained much of the original blue,dont see many scratches on the stock either.Thanks for posting. 0 -
Thanks for bringing back some great memories. When my dad was 10 (1956) his grandpa (my great-grandpa) gave him a Mossberg .410 bolt action with the external choke. My dad and his cousin took me on my first hunt, hunting rabbits with that gun. My dad wasn't into hunting but he felt like he needed to introduce me to hunting. I remember being so dang scared of shooting that .410. As I got older I loved hunting and would tote that old .410 in the woods for squirrels. It was a great squirrel gun. In high school I used to shoot doubles with it and got to where I could cycle that bolt as fast as my buddies with their pump's. I need to go over to dad's and borrow it again. 0 -
My Aunt gave me my uncles mossberg 20 ga. bolt action a few years ago when he died. It came with a bag full of slug rounds, only god knows how old they are, They moved to Az. in the early 60s and you can't use slugs here. So I think you can shoot slugs in them.

I was given it when I was 13, have drug it across the country a couple times, it has some blemishes, but I would not be afraid to take it afield any day[;)]

Well mine looks just like that one but. Its branded by Western Auto.
Used to keep it in my gun rack cheap and was not worried about it being stolen. Don't know how many time somebody would ask me what Caliber is that thing.[:D]
It was sawed off when I got it, had a gunsmith redo the end and put on a new bead.0 -

Yep,ive gotten some jaw dropping expressions from fellow hunters when i pull my 20 out of the truck,thinking im going rabbit hunting with a rifle.0 -

Had one 25 years ago,since then it was made into a handgun of sorts, nasty little piece even in 20 ga. FEDS--> I do not have the gun in my possesion, and have not for 20 yrs. 0 -

Forty five years ago kids would save for a year to buy a Stevens 59 bolt .410 or a Mossberg 183 bolt. Almost all my teenage friends had one or the other. If you were really well off you might have a stevens double barrel. Now these little sh#ts start out as 10 year olds with an automatic, pump or even an O/U They miss alot of fun. Of course in the 50's and 60's you could hunt almost any farm in N. Illinois and find rabbits and pheasants if you stayed out for 3 hours or longer. Now my adult friends have great guns coming out their ears but nowhere to hunt or plink. When I go out to the home farm I see no cover for 4-5 miles straight. Yeah the land is worth $7000+ an acre ....... 0 -
i still shoot my mossy 183k in 410 at the skeet range. people cant believe its possible to shoot doubles, but i do regularly.[^] 0
