Look What Rolled In
A guy walked in today babbeling about a 105 he found while metal detecting in his back yard. After he slowed down a bit, he said "Wanna see it?!". Being one of the last great adventurers I said of course! He said he had been riding around with it in his trunk for two days!
In he comes with a rusted and corroded AUR 105mm circa 1942. Hard to tell if it's live or what. Carefully I clean some of the corrosion off the PD fuze and can't find any nomenclature, but it does have settings (bad sign). There are no holes anywhere in the projectile (another bad sign). Finally in the shell casing I can find no holes in it either (VERY BAD SIGN).
On the brass base it says DRILL M14. I look it up and it's listed as a factory drill round. The fuze is wrong though. It should have a solid alumninum one, but this is like a regular PD fuze so I guess it will occupy my time for a couple of days. It's set screw is chemically welded so, to verify it is not a live warhead, it will take a couple of hours of patience to remove it without heat or impact, both bad news to explosives. [:o)]

Beyond good sense (even though you seem knowledgeable I wouldn't recommend messing with it) aren't there questions of legality in having that thing?

Had a guy picked up an old Mortar shell , lugged it around for a couple days, took it into his house put in on the bookshelf, they were setting eating dinner and Ka! BOOM He will never pick up another unexploded peice of ordnance..[:(]

My boss told a story of a man he knew who`s son found a shell years ago while out dirt bikeing by the National Guard training grounds.He told his son to take it back. It blew up on the way back and killed him. Dad had to live with it.

one of my former customers went to federal prison for a loooonnng time for having stuff like that at his home. nobody knew he had it til one day there was a fire at the home and as the FD was putting it out they discovered his cache--thank god the fire had not spread to the room with the shells and hand grenades--they belived it was stolen from a National Guard Armoury. 0 -

I have been to Hope AR, and I have been there recently. There isn't much "hope" for Hope. Although now they do have a KFC.
My point, I have also been out to P3's place a few times. If there is anyone I want handling 60 year old explosives in Lower Alabama, it is certainly P3 instead of the local law enforcement!

squad. They can X-ray it and tell ya if it's live or not. Don't mess
with it and get blowed up....until at least make your will out with

You are going to attempt to put a wrench to the projectile head to remove the fuse? On old, unexploded ordnance? What in the name of God are you thinking? Get that 105mm round as far away from you as possible!

I believe all US artillery and mortar shells have bore safe mechanisms
requiring a boot in the azz to arm them.
The 105 is semi-fixed to adjust the charge.
The reward doesn't justify the risk.
People keep getting blown up in France from monkeying with unearthed WW1

My home town buddies came to visit and party with me at college. We always mixed a batch of "Purple Passion" to drink and party down with. Purple Passion is mainly gin, Welches grape juice concentrate, Vodka and anything else around to provide extra kick and volume. Long after they had left I still had a glass jar full of Purple Passion sitting on my roommates bookshelf above his study desk. KABOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!!!!!!!!!The damn stuff exploded causing dozens of people to come running to see what happened. I was at my desk acroos from the explosion with purple glass shrapnel peppered all over my back. My roommate was lying on his bed about 10 feet away and he was covered in broken glass and and all purple. He would have been killed or at least blinded if he had been sitting at his desk at point blank range. And we drank this stuff? Those were the days! 0 -
