Mini-Rant USPS vs. UPS

Why does the USPS even have tracking numbers? I can never track a package just that it was notified to ship and then after I get the package, they update that it was recieved.

I like the UPS system where it updates and you can see where the package is.



Has anyone here ever had the USPS system show you where the package is, instead of just shipped/recieved?

    That is because both UPS and FedEx have scanners that transmit the information to a central system almost as soon as the item is scanned. The USPS does not have this system and probably never will.

    Sometimes USPS will show when a package left a particular facility but usually it's just so you can prove a package has been delivered. Actually, that has helped me on several occasions when someone tried to rip me off. It's also required by PayPal if youwant to file a claim under the Seller's Protection Agreement.

    It will also show if the carrier left a note on the recipient's door and was unable to deliver it. I've had people ask me where their item is and, through USPS, I could tell them that it's at their local post office waiting for pickup. It will also show who signed for a package if you requested Signature Confirmation. It's not perfect but it's better than nothing.

    Yes, I have tracked USPS packages through each hub. If you wait until after the package is delivered to check then you have to click on "additional details"

    USPS only offers tracking on their "global priority" anything else is delivery confirmation only, what do you expect for .35?....

    UPS scans the package each time it arrives and departs a facility. So it's easy to follow the progress of the package.
    The Post Office doesn't do that. They only scan for proof of delivery.

    Actually USPS is supposed to scan a parcel when it arrives and when it leaves a facility, but the data never makes it to the tracking page.

    I'm confused as to why you folks are having problems. I have always been able to track the progress of USPS packages with the "Delivery Confirmation" tracking number.

    For example:

    Delivered, January 12, 2008, 9:39 am, BROOKLYN, NY 11232
    Bullet Arrival at Unit, January 12, 2008, 6:47 am, BROOKLYN, NY 11232
    Bullet Processed, January 11, 2008, 11:36 am, JERSEY CITY, NJ 07097
    Bullet Processed, January 08, 2008, 11:46 am, HAZELWOOD, MO 63042
    Bullet Acceptance, January 07, 2008, 9:45 am, ALAMO, IN 47916

    You have to click on the additional details link in order to see the current (or most recent) location of your package.

    USPS delivery/signature confirmation is only designed to provide the mailer with "proof of delivery". Just like it says- it is not a step by step tracking service. The coincidental scans you see are not what you pay for. Trust me, I know this, it's my job.

    I use USPS exclusively, and I have wondered why some people are so interested in where a package is while it is enroute. It either gets where it is going or it doesn't. Knowing how many times it stopped before it got there won't change anything.
