GUN FOR A GIFT

i know it is legal for a father or mother to give their child a firearm. if the child is of LEGAL AGE,does said child have to register the firearm in their name or can they leave it in the parents name?

    Check with your local District Attorney Office. Each state is different.

    The only "register" that I know of, is a 4473, the kid is not old enough to fill one out.

    P.S.
    This is for "federal" purposes, can't say about individual states.

    the 4473 is what i am talking about. "example" i am 60 mom is 80 mom buys me a gun just because she wants to. do i have to fill out the 4473?

    yes, the first question is "are you the actual buyer of the firearm ?"

    OK- assuming the state does not have a state registration requirement- you are 60, Mom is 80, and Mom goes to dealer and buys you a birthday present. SHE fills out the 4473- SHE is the actual purchaser. That she is making you an unsolicited free and clear gift of it does not change that SHE is buying the gun. However, if you gave her all or part of the money to have her buy the gun FOR you, THAT is a strawman purchase. Go to the ATF website, and go thru their dealer's training on line.

    Federal law prohibits the transfer of any firearm to any person under 18 years of age. Texas law prohibits making a loaded firearm available to a person under 17 years of age. Texas law does not recognize property rights for persons under 18 years of age. So, I would say that a minor cannot legally "own" a firearm. Possession is another matter.

    Also under Federal law, it is legal for a person to buy a firearm and give it to any other person not otherwise prohibited from receiving it. There is no Federal registration. If your state has a registration process, you may need to look into that.
