rust after 4 days...DOH!!!

I thought I had cleaned my barrel real well, guess I was wrong. After 4 days I have surface rust and looks like a little pitting just after the breech. I just used what I had on hand tonight (Breakfree CLP) with a bronze 50 cal brush and patches. Looks nice and bright now but still looks like a slight pitting has occured. Shot 777 pellets and sabots last weekend. Cleaned between shots and once when I got home. Is the CLP ok that I used in the interim? From now on I will use soap and water 1st thing when I get home instead of the TC patches with No13 cleaner.

    I always scrub the bore with scalding hot water and Dawn dish soap then rinse it out with more hot water.
    For lube I use TC Bore Butter. Petrolium based oils will burn and leave a carbon fouling that is darned hard to remove. I've never had the carbon fouling with Bore Butter. At the range I just patch the nasties out with Windex followed by a dry patch every third loading.

    I clean with hot water and dishsoap too. I allways oil it down good when done, if I am putting it up for the winter or a long period of time I put a patch on the nipple drop the hammer on it, then pour 3-4 squirts of oil down the barrell, it keeps the barrell and the nipple from growing that stuff that looks like it came off a battery terminal. While hunting out at camp, after cleaning every evening I store the gun barrell down stock up, if there is any water left in barrell it will run out by morning.

    Your error was not using hot soap and water first. Windex with viniger will also work. Trick is you need water to disolve black powder or pyrodex or tripple seven. Then use the CLP as a preservitive.

    yes sir, did that lastnight after shooting it. World of difference...hot water and some Dawn cleaned her real nice. CLP cleaned her up a bit more. Looks close to 100% now.

    my encore is 6yrs old and looks as new as the day I pulled it out of the box.. it has never seen pyrodex or BP only 777 I have cleaned it this way since it was new and have never had any problems with it

    I'm telling you guys. If your muzzleloader can use it, Blackhorn 209. No cleaning in between shots. And cleanup is a breeze. Yes, it is a little more expensive. But I think well worth it.
