i was thinking of having the barrel chopped down to something more reasonable than 30 in for cas. like 24 or 26 inch, do most people do that or do they just leave them 30 inch? also to install choke tubes or not? i see some barrel are longer than others and i dont think they came from factory with shorter barrels. i will also post this on ask the experts

Yes winchester did manufacture shorter barrels for the 1897,the best one to use in my opinion would be 26" with cylinder bore but they are hard to find. 0 -
Two answers.
First, if it is not in "collectible" condition, cut it back to 1 inch longer than legal for CAS. Shoot the heck out of it. Don't worry about choke tubes unless you are even contemplating something like cowboy clays. At normal CAS/SASS ranges an open tube is best.
Second, don't ask these questions here. This is a great forum. But, it is full on non-cowboy shooters. If you have a question pertaining to cowboy shooting, go to www.sassnet.com. They tend to be a bit cantankerous, but you will get straight answers from people that shoot cowboy, not people that tried it once and didn't like it.
