Pledge of Allegiance opinions
Hello all I need some help,
I am an avid hunter and member of this post for several years. My child is a 1st grader in a public school. Her teacher and principal both feel that the kids don't need to recite the Pledge of Allegiance except on special occasions. Every teacher can decide on their own if or when the kids say the Pledge and I can tell you that most classes do not. I am trying to convince the School Board to adopt a consistent policy of daily recitation of the Pledge.
What do you think???

I don't really think daily recital is particularly important, compared to some other things. In my elementary school days, you recited the pledge of allegiance, and then stood with your hand over your heart until the national anthem was over. Didn't mean a thing.
What's important is that the schools should teach what the pledge of allegiance MEANS. I recited it school day after school day through elementary and middle school. It wasn't until my college years that I understood the importance of those words, and their meaning, and I find that sad.0 -

I don't disagree with your second paragraph - EVERY child should know the pledge and understand what the words mean. Even the youngest can grasp the basic idea. I disagree, however, with the first paragraph. Given that they do get the proper education as (which I admit is not happening now), requiring all students to stand, face the flag and cover their heart with their hand is an excellent way to instill pride in their country and impress upon them the importance of the pledge. The fact that this doesn't happen as it should can be seen at any ballgame or other public gathering where the pledge or anthem is performed. There should be laws!0 -

I suggest you recite the pledge of allegiance, and pay attention to the words. In fact, I'll write it out here for you.
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all.
There isn't so much an inkling towards government. The pledge of allegiance is towards the flag, and in turn to the nation that the flag represents, and most of all, to the values for which this nation stands.
It's quite simply a pledge of allegiance to America. NOT to the American government.0 -
That's the way I've always looked at it. And that's why I get steamed when it's reported that somebody has a dirty mexican flag flying over the American flag. 0 -

You are pledging allegiance to a Republic(government).
The founders must be rolling in their graves over the idea that the citizenry of this country are pledging their loyalty to the government, flag, whatever.
Ill devote my loyalty to GOD, and my family thank you very much.

When I pledge allegiance, I pledge allegiance to what the American flag represents, and that is ultimately the American way of life, and the American people. The REPUBLIC represents the people. The government does not.
And as for pledging allegiance to God? I'd have to say that's conditional.
If God were to come down to me in person and order me to cease my relentless devotion to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness as the American way of life, I would choose the American way of life over Him.0 -

Salzo, I can very much appreciate your take on this and I find no fault with it.
Mine is different.
To me the Flag is "us", the people. And I have no problem pledging allegiance and partnership with one such as you or anyone else who "really" believes in the Constitution.
As far as pledging to the "Republic", again I have no problem with that. We are so far removed from it that if people took this pledge and meant it, the Constitution would still be the law of the land and we would still be a Republic. To me "Republic" and our govt are as far apart as the milky way is wide.
This does not take anything away from my first and foremost devotion to God.0 -
How exactly does one reconcile the fact that we are supposed to be free people with forcing children to stand and recite a pledge to a government, especially since they would be forced to do so in a school they are forced by the Government to attend?
Bear in mind that the Pledge was written in 1892 by a Socialist and it did not contain the words "Under God". Those words were added officially in 1954 partly at the urging of Senator McCarthy as part of his modern day witch-hunt campaign against communist subversion.0 -
When I learned the Pledge, it was "One nation indivisible".
Chuckles' commie-fear mongering hero got it changed, just like putting "In God we trust" on currency.
