quote:As the Gun Control Act of 1968 was nearing the President's desk, NRA was being accused by Senator Robert Kennedy (D-NY) of not supporting "any legislation to try and control the misuse of rifles and pistols in this country." Naturally, NRA needed to respond to the allegation, and they responded with great detail and unusual candor.
I must admit this was a sly move by Kennedy, and the NRA swallowed it hook line and sinker.[:(][xx(]

Consider the many, many years the NRA has been in existance. Consider how many different NRA presidents there have been and how many executive directors as well as other lower level NRA managers. Consider how complex the subject of gun contol (call it what you want. Criminal control, at least attemping to keep guns out of the hands of criminals, mental defectives, young children, etc.) .It is possible that regardless of how good the NRA tried to be, with all that I have just described there will always be people/organizations that can pick and choose dates, facts, actions, names, quotes, etc. that can make the NRA look bad.

All I know FOR SURE is that the NRA had a direct involvment with getting CCW for MO & KS as well as the other gun rights laws I mentioned in another post. Yeah, yeah, I know to some that being given a CCW license is an insult to that gun owner and to the 2A. But from a practial stand-point having a CCW and actually being able to carry concealed is a hell of a lot better than what we had before CCW started to made popular by Marion Hammer in Fla in the early 90's (I think, maybe late 80's) BTW Marion is a past president of the NRA and still a member and supporter. It is good enough for her, her who has done more for gun rights than probably any 10 GB.com members, but it is not good enough for many other gun owners.

Right now the NRA(as usual)is fighting the annual Daley gun grabbing bills here in Illinois.

Here's the 64 million dollar question....
How many think we would be better off today if the NRA never exsisted?
No I'm not talking about some other org would have come to our rescue.

It is interesting that you offer that information. I have read other posters that claim the NRA does nothing in ILL, or they say such things like "Well, if the NRA was any good we would have these oppressive anti-gun laws in ILL (or whatever area they are from)." But I usually think such statements are made by people who always sit on the sidelines, do nothing for gun rights and therefore don't have a damn clue as to who is fighting for them.

Well I must also add the NRA doesn't have much success here in Illinois(thus the reason they do nothing)because the democratic grip is so strong. Not only by Daley but the general assembly as a whole. We have no CCW and last year or the year before the rebirth of the expired "assault weapons" ban failed by 3 votes. They will try again.

OK. Here is what I think.

If the NRA didn't exist there are two scenerios:
    1. The people would have to take PERSONAL responsibility for their rights. This means a whole gaggle of people would call/demonstrate/e-mail/snail mail their reps. Not 5 or 6 lawyer in suits showing up in the NRA's defense. A hord of people is MUCH more intimidating because A. the mob mentality and B. people would be more sensitive to WHOM they vote for come election time. Poeple HAVING to take time and put EFFORT into their RIGHTS would translate into BETTER legislation/lack of unconstitutional laws, and better representation of elected officials.

    OR the less likely scernio
    2. The power hungry run rampent and destroy our government as we know it in a matter of months.

In a perfect world #1 sounds good but that's assuming the lazy people will get off their buts and do something instead of just complain about it.

Isn't that why we have the corruption in government today?

I believe that the NRA has destroyed our gun Rights...bluntly put.

Had they not existed, there would have been sweeping gun bans..'turn them in'...and an aroused citizenry would have cleaned out the vipers in Washington.
Instead, the NRA has forced the government to water down each new gun law...but always moving towards the final solution...no guns allowed.

As time goes on, more sweetly 'reasonable' people accept more and more gun control...'for our own good'..and the Second Amendment supporters get fewer and older....

All the gun 'Rights' you folks brag about 'getting back'are NOTHING..except absolute proof to yet more people that THERE IS NO ABSOLUTE RIGHT TO OWN GUNS...not without governmental permission.

You gave up a Right for permission.
Sleep well tonight, all you who gave up without a fight..and the Great how many times removed Fathers of you all spit on you.

So what is there to lead us to believe this will not still happen?
Assuming that it would have in the first place.

Hunter..I covered that here.. quote:Instead, the NRA has forced the government to water down each new gun law...but always moving towards the final solution...no guns allowed.

    Dan;

You have been all over these threads..posting your propaganda.

Like a good little sheep..just how does the air smell, anyway, with your nose pressed against the sheep in front of you, walking over the edge of the cliff ?

You got nothing to add at all, apparently..so your fall-back position is rankest propaganda ?
WAKE UP, MAN...your Rights are vanishing at a rate that OUGHT to alarm ANYBODY !!

I saw that Highball, but I maintain the general populace is much more content screaming and kicking in the comfort of their own home while our rights go down the tube. AKA too frigging lazy to steer from the path.

Tr, they are a self sustaining for profit entity. Encourage gun control with the left hand, fight it with the right hand. Yes we would have been much better off without the NRA or myriad other for profit organizations. Left to our own devices we would fight and win battles! But we are lazy and dumb, and letting someone else do a less than half-assed job is good enough. Dumb and lazy....tell me where this doesn't apply in every other aspect of the modern American psyche?

Why was he worth almost a MILLION DOLLARS in 2004, and probably more today?

How many annual memberships go to pay the top 5 salaries at NRAHQ? [xx(]
