    A warrant (see the 4th amendment) OR CONSENT is required.

    Note that on a traffic stop police can ask - "Will you give permission to search your car?"

    If the driver says "yes", no warrant is required. Driver has waived his 4th amendment right. If he says "no", police will need to show probable cause to a judge to get a warrant.

    Parents can give consent for minors. They may want to think twice, because they will be held responsible for the actions of minors in their homes.
