Reweld Thompson Receiver?

How far can you weld a 1928 thompson receiver back together to still be legal? I have seen one that is all welded together except for the saw cut to the nose of the receiver where you attach the barrel. Is it legal?

  We have been using a cutoff saw to cut receivers into two pieces, to write these off our log books. This is no longer the case. During several BATF inspections we are told that receivers and frames must be torch cut in to 3 three pieces.
