Oh Mr. Forgemonkey
Question for you wise one.If we get a 1911 in here that needs a new recoil spring I always use a Wolf 18 1/2. I'm talking about a full size 5" .45 acp gun. It has always worked well for me and I'm not trying to tune the gun to a specific load.
Your thoughts please??

I don't know for sure but I think I started using 18 1/2 after reading Wolf's recommendations a long time ago. It has always worked for my guns as well as my customer's guns. No I see no sense for buffers or the stupid ( in my opinion)full length guide rods. As far as when I change springs some guns come in with springs that have been cut as was the case with a nice Ithaca WW II gun today. Someone had cut the recoil spring and the firing pin spring. I usually replace the spring on the rental guns around three or four thousand rounds. The Wolf springs come with new firing pin springs so I replace those as well. Again I'm not building or tuning guns to specific loads. Just need them to run with full power ball and HP. 0
