just started on TCM, I couldn't tell you how many time I have watched it, maybe this time they will all get out......

    Yep. Great movie.

    One of the top ten I could watch over and over. (And have.) A true classic.

    I have been watching a lot of Steve McQueen on his old "Wanted Dead Or Alive" TV series he did back in the late 50's. I can definitely tell that he honed his acting skills a lot during and after this series. He started out pretty green but improved along the way!

    It has been a while since I saw The Great Escape but memory always feels great sorrow for Donald Pleasance who IIRC had severe vision problems and was in that crash landing. His role in the film for me gave it that special part that got my eyes watering.

    I could be mistaken, but I believe he was indeed a POW in WWII.

    In talking with several of the ww2 vets around town they all agree that the Steve McQueen character was likely based on a fellow named ?Bootsie? Lewis . He was a POW and escaped 5 or 6 times from various stalag. When the war was over and he finally came home he ran a car dealership and garage got many years .
