Trump did what he does best; he made it personal.
He stated that if you are responsible for the deaths of Americans, we will find you and kill you.
A statement to Iran, but more importantly, a very public statement to the new government in Iraq that we are serious about the security of Americans, regardless of what some in the parliament made think or want.
This is not as is being stated by most, an escalation. Rather it is a measured response that not only demonstrates our resolve, it demonstrates our ability to specifically target individuals and eliminate them without injury to non-combatants.
The Ayatollah may or may not take this one act seriously, but if and when we continue the whack-a-mole campaign against properly identified and vetted Iranian terrorist instigators, he will either get the message or find it increasingly difficult to send his operatives abroad.
There is obviously some risk in this approach, but as nothing else seems to be working and Americans are being targeted, we have little choice.
The phony umbrage being displayed by members of Congress is misplaced and so obviously politically motivated it is not worth a mention, much less the air time being devoted. This is not an act of aggression. It is a direct response upon an individual because of the actions of that individual.
On balance, I would think the potential for long term de-escalation is greater than the potential for long term escalation as a result of this extremely limited and well targeted execution.0 -

Regardless of how we might define this issue in terms of escalation, it does not look like this will go down in his favor. That stated, the democrats are such hated people in this country that they need the Iranians to retaliate, big time, in most any fashion due to the assassination's in order for his republican anti-war supporters to not vote for him, or vote democratic. 0 -

Iraq received the message and has acted.
Their parliament phrased the statement interestingly, with all foreign forces being asked to leave the country.
Absent further negotiation, the US will comply as we should. Will the Iraqis enforce this upon the Iranian led militias that control much of the country, or will this end up with the removal of US forces and those of the Iranian's, though proxies, be allowed/encouraged to stay?
Either way, it is good that Trump's actions have forced the Iraqis to go on record. Our mis-adventure in Iraq has emplaced a government that is not what we wanted, and apparently it is time to leave.
Some will call this a strategic loss and blame Trump for impetuous actions that weaken our standing. It is too early to tell. As with previous requests, there is the strong possibility for a negotiated presence. Frankly, I think it is time to accept the results of our offensive destruction of the Iraqi government. This is what we put in motion in 2003.
17 years of bloodshed, with over half a million Iraqis no longer living. The goal may have been noble, but when we seek to impose democracy upon a population, we will often be faced with an outcome not to our liking.
This was one of the outcomes that had to have been discussed prior to taking out Soleimani. It is very possible that this was the expected outcome. Frankly, it is very possible that this was the desired outcome.
The devil we knew in Saddam may have been better than the devil we have in Iraq today, but we will not truly know for at least a generation or two. I for one am of the opinion that it is not worth more American lives as this truth unfolds.0 -

I would agree with this as well. I enlisted in 1979, at the height of the Iranian takeover of our Embassy and it's Staff. (Civilians and Military.) Subsequently held hostage for over a year. (If I remember correctly.) [444 days?]
They pretty much declared War on us at that point. All else that has transpired is but a prelude to the main event. If they are not careful, they may just get what they have been asking for. I believe POTUS Trump can deliver it, if they keep pushing it.0
