Bro, it is absolutely Horrible. I can not sleep with the mask. (BPAP.) (Super Claustrophobic) I can not sleep without the mask. I have been waking up at 12:30 or so each night. Finally getting out of bed around 3:00 am, every night for about the last two weeks. Feeling like I am getting smothered. It's bad.

I feel so totally screwed, and debilitated. Trying to go to sleep each night, terrifies me. It is really, really bad. I do not know what to do. (I paid about $1k out of pocket for my BPAP machine.) I really Try to use it each night.

I do not know what else to do. I've only been getting 2-4 hours sleep per night for months now. It is crushing me.

I have started to post about it a couple times, but I do not want to sound like a Whiner.

I would be the same way. I hate having anything on my face when sleeping. I hate Gas Masks and even filter masks. I had to work in my FIL's attic and he gave me a filter type mask. I lasted about 10 min then it was off.

Sorry to hear you are having problems. Don't they have "less invasive" type masks?

My nose has been broken numerable times. It pretty much does not function anymore. 20% of normal passage?

If it did work, I could use a "Nose Pillow," not a full face mask.

Since my nose does not function, I have no choice but to use a full face mask.

I never used to be Claustrophobic, this is a relatively new thing for me. Started about 3-4 years ago. It has been getting progressively worse. It pretty much terrifies me. I feel like I am suffocating.

    I feel desperate/lost.

Have you been back to the sleep lab? Might just be that you need the mask fitted properly and make sure the ramp rate is adjusted properly.

Make sure you have a clear airway. Head straight not to the side. Maybe some back ground music to soften the machine noise.
My machine sits below he level of the bed so I don't hear it much.

Takes getting used to, If you can start out on your back. As you are laying down, Think of mundane repetitive things. Don't dwell on work or other problems.
Might try using in a recliner, to start with, to take pressure off your chest.

    Lots of things to try.
    Wish you well.

Thank you Brother. I am receptive to all insight. My problem, (I believe,) is that my mind is over active. I can not get it to shut down overnight. I believe I have breathing issues in excess of what the "Sleep Lab," usually encounters. My nose hase been crushed/broken badly a couple times. My nose hardly works at all. I am a total mouth breather. I have night terrors of being suffocated. I have to get up repetitively, and walk around, to calm/subdue the feeling, usually with little success.

My worst fear/terror is being tied up, and having tape place over my mouth. I would suffocate (slowly) in a few minutes. It is a recurrent nightmare.

Dr Vodka helps me get a good 4-5 hours of sleep before my "medication" wears off and the pain starts screaming my name.

    Sometimes I see Dr Snapps.

They took my pain pills a couple years ago. I figured if I dit not need them then I probably didn't need those other pills they were selling me!

I was correct. My mind is calm and clear when I go to bed, no hot flashes from other meds, no added weight gain , etc. I also gave up GQB's.
That was the best thing I have done for myself in my entie life.

Meds cause problems in your body, interact with other meds, and are frequently too strong.

So my advice is re-evaluate your medications and GQB's (Greedy Quack Bastards).

Sorry to hear about the continuing sleep problems Ken. I was hoping the silence meant things were going good. Why don't you try joining that CPAP forum I told you about? It can't hurt!

As far as the A-fib,....I'm just like you when I had it. No need to be told. Surprisingly there are quite a few people that are asymptomatic with a-fib, and this device really comes in handy for them.

I appreciate your input Sam. (But) I am 6' 1" 195 lbs. (Not overweight.)

(But) Again, any insight is appreciated. I am desperate for a resolution/solution to this 2-3 hours sleep per night regimen.

    It has been crushing/debilitating.

My problem, (I believe,) is that my mind is over active. I can not get it to shut down overnight.

    I have the same problem.

I have been that way all my life and it makes sound sleeping difficult, but on the other hand ain't no body going to slip up on me at night ;) The VA said it was from PTSD and tried to put that crap in my records. I told the DR I have been that way all my life before I was in the Army and to keep any PTSD stuff out of my records. That is what I get for telling the truth to a DR

When I got out I gained about 20 pounds and started snoring, once I got it off I stopped. I had never snored before and I am a mouth breather too, between allergy's and busted nose I cannot breathe exclusively through my nose.

Again sorry to hear the machine isn't working. I think I would go back and see what they can do for you, that is a lot of money spent on something that doesn't work.

    Ken,

A couple of things r/t the bipap. Even if the machine is set optimally you have to fight your way through the first couple of weeks to get used to it. That requires doing what you are doing, wearing it each time you lay down to sleep. Most people go through this. That leads to another thing and that is a follow up with your pulmonologist. If your machine needs adjusting that can be done in the office. Be sure to take the card from the machine with you to the visit. They can look at the information recorded on the card and use that and your input to evaluate how the machine is working for you and what. if any, adjustments are needed.

I know your insurance has been effected. If you call the office explain that and ask what your options are for follow up they will probably work with you. The follow up is important, especially if you are having trouble using the machine after a couple of weeks.

If I wanted to go back to smoking, I am sure I would sleep like a Baby. That was one of the best side effects.

Would calm my mind down, allow me to go to sleep, in a heartbeat.

Too bad the Medical side, does not address/see the benefits of said "Drug." I guess there is no significant $$ in it for them. Right?

I appreciate the kick in the A$$ though.

Not a bad idea. I have considered that previously. Thank you for the thought/insight Sir. I get really claustraphobic trying to breathe/sleep at night. Have to get up multiple times to walk around/calm down. I have been waking up around 12:30 -1:30 lay there until about 2:30-3:30 am and have to get up, for months now.

I dread having to go to bed each night.

that was what the nurse told me to do if I couldn't get used to it when sleeping, she said to put it on every chance I got in the evenings before bed, the more you use it the more used to it you will get and it should become second nature. Hope you get it worked out.....

I had no idea you were claustrophobic, or I would have predicted issues with a full face mask. I'm surprised you were able to sleep in one the night of your second sleep study. I don't suffer from anything like that, so it's a bit hard for me to comprehend fully.

Another suggestion is to get a P10 nasal pillow setup for 60 bucks, and use a chin strap with it. Trust me,....that pressurized air WILL make it up your nasal passages regardless of a deviated septum. ( I have one as well ).
The nasal pillow should cut way down on your feelings of being closed in.

Just a suggestion, as I'm sure you will adapt to the full face gig with a little time. I didn't really have any issues, but I still woke up at 3AM wanting to take the freaking thing off, just like you. It was just annoying to me being hooked up to a hose. I kept at it, and now it's like second nature. Good luck!
