Christmas Lunch on Copperhead Road -
Yes, that Copperhead Road. (From the song.)
I am intimately familiar with that area. (About 7 - 10 miles from my current residence.) Lots of relatives and somewhat grew up around there. No matter where we lived, (Dad was in the Army for 32 years.) We would come and spend the summers there, putting up hay, topping/cutting/hanging tobacco, slopping the hogs, milking the cows, riding horses, plowing with a Mule, back country logging with anywhere from a 2-4 team of Mules, driving the various tractors from an early age, the rare treat of driving the tractors and equipment 15-20 miles to another piece of property with all the other Cousins about our same age, all/most around Watauga Lake, (huge and beautiful.) etc. etc.
Beautiful Country around here. Lots of good memories.
I love listening to that song. One of my all time favorites.
My Aunt, one of my Mom's 4 Sisters, has a really nice house there, that is large enough for the whole clan to gather. Everyone brings a dish. Quite the spread. Lots of farm fresh vegetables. Grilled brussel sprouts with bacon, green beans, Real mashed potatoes, etc. etc. Roast beef, spiral sliced ham, little smokies, on and on and on. Way too much food to consume. Came home with a lot of leftovers for today.
It's nice to live in the boonies/Country. I was able to move back down here about 7-8 years ago, after living all over the Country. I've always considered this "Home," since I was a kid. Miss a lot of close Cousins who passed too soon.
I sat outside on the back/side porch with an awesome view of the Countryside and mountains, because it was such a nice/warm day. (50?) and because it was way to hot inside. Enjoying the peace and quiet and reminiscing about all the good times and memories around there.
I hope you all had a great Christmas. You GBGD Forum friends, mean a lot to me. I appreciate you all.

Never heard of copperhead road. I have heard of tobacco road. I have kept copperheads and bred them and raised the young though. 0 -

"Copperhead Road," is Classic somewhat modern Country song. One of, (I think THE ) Best.
You probably do not/have not listen/listened to much of that.

Google "Copperhead Road." I feel fairly certain there is or would be a you tube of the song. Well worth giving a listen to. Pay close attention to the words/meaning of the song.0 -

They mention "Johnson County," in the song. No mistaking what "Copperhead Road," they are referring to.
Better mind your business when you come to "Copperhead Road." Not many outsiders come down around here.

My grandmothers house was the gathering spot for our clan at Christmas and thanksgiving. Sadly as the older generations died out the gatherings became fewer and less frequent. Now I have cousins who I see once or twice a year if that . Sad how things have changed . Happy New Yrar to all you guys ! 0 -
I could listen to that song over and over. One of my top 5 favorites of all time. Living/growing up around there, it means a lot to me.
Why does stuff like that make me cry?
Tears rolling down my cheeks, all three times I listened to/watched the Video.
I CAN tell you, if the Brown fecal matter ever hits the rotary wind moving device - this will be one of the most survivable areas of the Country to be in. (Another big reason I moved back down here.) "A Country Boy, Can Survive."
I am (a'hem) fairly well prepped, as is my entire Holler. Lots of good Folk roundabouts, all on the same page. We have one road into our Holler, turn around at the end, same road back out. Terrain in our favor. Road will be blocked in fairly short order, in multiple sharp curves. (Yes, we have a "Game Plan.") Not a good place to come to.
There have been a fair amount of people who have simply disappeared in Johnson County. (Well documented.) Not a good place to come and act a fool.0 -

Related to them. Did you build Doran and Vida's place? Big brick on top of a hill. Fairly steep concrete driveway, curves up and to the right. Their old farm house is just to the left of the new house. That's where I ate Christmas lunch.0 -

Check out "The Down Home Pickin' Parlor," near ETSU. Used to go there all the time, starting from about 15, when my older Cousins would get me in - in order to be the "Designated Driver," later in the evening. I started going there again while attending ETSU after getting out of the Army.
I have seen some Classic Country/Bluegrass Artists there, including Doc Watson, close enough to reach out and touch.0 -

Knew a fellow years ago that lived on copperhead road, farmed for a living, he was a Bunton, won't mention his first name. Story goes he was picking corn and got off the tractor to check on the picker. Well you know the rest of the story. Got too close to the picker and it caught his bib overalls, he had enough composure and time to unbuckle the bibs and off they came. Somehow he escaped bodily harm and was later seen riding the rig home in his bvd's, that is if he had any on. You know what they say about a man that wears bib overalls and roll his own smokes.
Know any Trivett's in Johnson county.

Glad to see you discovered the place. It is a Local Icon. Been there since at least the early 70's when I discovered it/was introduced/"Shanghai'd" to it. I don't know how long it had been there before that though. Was always one of my favorite places to go.

Bart cut hay all over the mountains. My dad and I would cut and bale some pretty steep rough ground, when it got too steep for us the land owners called Bart and his son Marvin. Cut hay 50 years ago on fields that were so steep someone had to follow the baler to keep bales from rolling off into the woods. 0 -

Been there done that. LOL we would definately cut some fields that were too steep to load on to wagons. We'd pop them out of the bailer, and as you said - would have someone (me, or another cousin) stop them from rolling off in to the woods. Man that brings back memories.

Thank you sir, and Happy New Year to you! Yes we are loving it here, have seen so much and hiked so many places but still have soo much more to see! Oh and BTW, Rheatown Store is a little gem out towards Chuckey. Ma and Pa old time store with good homestyle food and on Saturday nights the locals come over to play some bluegrass tunes in the little back room. Great time and as authentic as you can get. Another gem I found is Ridgewood BBQ up by Elizabethton. Oh and Pennyman's diner in JC. Love this area!0 -
