filling small hole in a gunstock
I recently came by a rifle that the previous owner had installed a small brass monogram plate on the comb of the buttstock near the buttplate and when I removed it there was a nail on the backside of the plate that left a small hole about the size of a toothpick in the stock. My question is what would be a good filler that is sandable and will take a stain to blend it with the rest of the stock. It is a dark walnut stock. Any info is always appreciated.

Wood.
Drill a small hole where the nail was.
Glue in the correct size hardwood dowel.
Cut
Smooth
Stain

If it was a nail, then steam the hole shut. The wood should still be there. Distilled water.
added Actual grain and color match plug glued in would be almost invisible. Proper tinted "glue" is easy enough and would pass a quick glance.
added 2 Doing hardwood floors we used wood flower cement with sanding dust to get the average color of the floor.0 -
If it's a nice one, there are plug cutters so you can match the grain instead of showing end grain of a dowel. 0 -
"If it was a nail, then steam the hole shut. The wood should still be there. Distilled water.",..................if this doesn't work a small amount of brownells 'acra-glass' stained to match will work. 0 -
Looks like they drilled the stock with a hole just smaller than the nail on the monogram plate the hole is perfectly round. 0 -
Remove butt plate, drill small hole and use the sawdust that process creates to fill the hole. At least that way the wood color should match perfectly. 0 -
The idea of using the sawdust from the stock sounds good but what would I use to mix the sawdust with to make it stick ? 0 -

Wood glue would be "Elmers wood glue", which is yellow. You don't want to use the white "Elmers school glue".
They have a new clear "Elmers glue", but I have not tried that.

Fill the hole with wood and then add a drop or two and allow it to soak in and cure. If needed, and probably will be, add more wood and top with glue.
If the hole is as small as it sounds don't worry about the 'plug' working loose or not being deep enough. SC Thin will soak down far enough as well as penetrating the surrounding wood to form a solid plug.0
