I sure could use some ideas for this

Without engraving is there a way you can think of that would work for marking the caliber of an AR upper on the left side of the upper receiver in the flat area under the rail? It would be nice for it to be oil proof. I have several AR's in several calibers. At a glance it is hard to confirm caliber since most barrels are not marked in an area you can see with the hand guard on....

Any ideas are welcome.

    Its hard to beat color codes.
    Paint, markers, rubber bands, colored handguards, etc.

    I have the same problem but the one caliber I use almost 100% is 300BLK so the others simply don't get used.

    Change charging handle style, sights, etc. so each upper is just a tad different.

    Perhaps some type of paint or fingernail polish with a clear coat over it?

    Cut a nice oval out of some aluminium or brass stock. Stamp the cartridge designation using a 1/4" stamp set. Fill the stamp with white paint and use brass or aluminium black on the rest of the oval. Rough up the back and epoxy it to the thoroughly cleaned spot on your receiver.

    good idea and if you want a fancy tag go to a jewelry or trophy store and have a small plaque engraved and epoxy on

    Thanks guys. I want to leave all the lowers as-is no extra markings. The uppers are a different matter; I just ordered three more :o:(;) for myself as a Christmas present. I am leaning towards an engraved plaque type thing that will fit in that aprox 1/2" deep flat spot right below the Picatinny rail. Using epoxy should make it iol and solvent resistant. If I color code them and forget the code I am back to square one.

    You can buy both dust covers, as well as magazine release catches that are laser engraved with the rifle's caliber. Both easily replaceable with nothing permanent left behind.

    Skip the magazine painting part (7:50) unless interested,.....

    All my 5.56 AR's have hand guards and front sight towers (FSB).

    I figure, if I ever get another caliber, I'll get free floated barrel hand guards to tell it apart.

    Some folks will go with other color PMags for different calibers - Tan for 300blk etc.

    An ejection port cover/dust cover is less than ten bucks. Any number of ways to mark one and then replace it if need be.

    Nail polish has lasted on some of my front sights for decades. Some solvents will mess with nail polish, though not many.

    Im another for the dust/ejection cover. yankee hill sells them laser engraved with caliber for about $10

    Backside of the ejection port deflector, use a case head. Custom, and one of a kind.
    Same diameter drill to cut a relief just deep enough so it fits flush, and epoxy it in.
    Picked up a basket case Great Western SAA .45LC with ebony grips, and funky medallions. Refinished the grips, dug out the medallions, and stuck .45 case heads in. Punched the primers flat, hit em on the buffing wheel, dab of epoxy, stuck em in.

    I really like this.

    I only have AR?s in 5.56 & 6.8 but they are different stainless barrels/ optics, etc but if I had very similar guns this is great.
    I use a combination of blue/gray to keep track of 300 Blackout.

    Thanks Joe. After all the work I put into fixing/refinishing those grips, I decided to fit a pair of Ivoryite grips to it after I rust blue it dark blue, almost black, to go with the tooled black holster/gunbelt.
    Buddy was here reading over my shoulder, now he wants me to do all his uppers like I suggested to bpost. :roll: Told him sure, right after I finish up a couple of dozen other projects.
