People are truly nuts with phones and social media,.....
I went out to dinner over the weekend for the first time in awhile. Right off the bat, I noticed there was a well dressed younger couple with a little girl of maybe 8 years old being seated close by. Within minutes, both the husband and wife had whipped out their phones, and proceeded to become deeply immersed in whatever they were doing.
About ten minutes later the waiter came to take their order, and they sent him away because they hadn't even looked at their menus yet. Now all this time, the little girl is sitting there staring around the restaurant with her own parents not speaking a word to her, or each other.
I got to see about 3/4 of this event before I left, and didn't see these people speak more than 10 or 20 words after they finally ordered. They actually ate with a fork in one hand, and their phones in the other for a good part of the meal, all the while this kid sat there staring around at strangers.
WTH is wrong with the human race, and their addiction to these dumb azz phones? I watch these types of nutjobs from early AM till I get home during the week. Whole families driving in the same vehicle with nobody speaking because everyone is wrapped up in their own little electronic world. I have one myself, but don't get the fascination at all.
Maybe it's just me that thinks it's weird, but I hope not. Another reason I'm glad to be getting older.

When we have family over, we make it clear that for that time, our home is a "No phone zone". I told the grandchildren to just leave their phones in the car to lessen the shock of not being able to answer a call! 0 -
I bet they were on the gunbroker forum or maybe watching the bids for a gun on gunbroker. Was the father about 80 or 90 years old with a big gut and an NRA hat?

I will admit when the wife and I go out to eat we seldom say more than a couple words to each other . if we do its how do you like the? food OK ahhh yes / no . then she is on her phone and I am scrolling the internet news or web sites on my phone once in a while one of us will point out a interesting article or news clip but that's it and not very often . riding in the car is the same no talking or very little ( oh the the driver is not using there phone )
even at home I doubt we talk or spend 10 minutes a day with each other . and that is stretching the time some days . I guess 40+ years together nothing left to talk about0 -

Traveling in Europe, I watched people taking selfies in front of the greatest art and architecture in the history of man. Notre Dame, the Louvre, the Mona Lisa, and finally I could not take it any longer and said to a young woman taking a photo of herself in front of Leonardo's most famous painting, "It really is not about you, you know." Wasted, she did not speak English. It is not only here but in all of the developed world. 0 -

Yep, see it myself. People spending big bucks each month to play on their phone. I counted 15 people and 4 kids few days ago in a Dr's waiting room. (very larg room with a TV) 13 of them were playing with their phones, one had both a phone and a laptop. Two of the kids were about maybe 7 years old and were playing with phones.
Only people not on a phone were myself and a Rancher/Farmer type guy with a straw hat and oleall's. (overalls)
I've had a cell phone for about maybe 10 years that costs about $10 per month (renew by card bought at Wal Mart) only turn it on for out going calls. Phone is for making emergency call when out hunting, etc. Verizon nerds says if I get a later model phone I cannot use the $10 month card on the newer phone's. Phones now days are for the more costly plans. Must be in the same category as replacement generic windshield wiper blades @ $18 per blade that requires a rocket scientist to figure out how to install.
(also Verizon sucks big air)

It's pervasive and doesn't matter if it's in public on the street, in a restaurant, on a train or in the airport. Everyone except the very few are always on their cell phones. It's gotten so bad that even small children are given phones by their parents to use as pacifiers!
I graduated from beepers to bag phones to cell phones over 40 years without missing a beat. I did drag my feet getting a smart phone but it is certainly easier to carry when compared to the laptop I was used to carrying and it's lighter. It took me longer to learn all the ins and outs of getting the most from the smart phone but it has been worth it.
The difference is that I know where the off switch is and I know how and when to use it and do. I am not married to it but I use it for the specialized tool it is. It's a convenience which is both powerful and inconspicuous when not needed. The trick is to learn your manners again as to when it's necessary and when to turn it off.

As someone's tag line said "I could care less" what people do when they are out to eat or whatever on their time, the people who pizz me off are the ones cell phoning/texting whatever while driving.
I think we have reduced the number of cars that can get through a light by at least three or four due to each person being distracted by their device.0 -

Anyone can have a picture of a statue or landmark being IN the picture makes perfect sense to me for some reason. You should have seen those same freaks at the Monaco Yacht Show. For classless people riding on credit cards to pose in front of some of the super, mega and giga yachts like they could possibly be the charter guests or owners, it was enough to gag a maggot. Some even showed extra "skin" while posing, making it even more of an experience.

We are the same after 40 years but being that we work all day together in our businesses eating is about the only time we aren?t talking to each other.

You bet, taking a photo you at the Grand Canyon, or the tower in Pisa is certainly great. But I think that is a different thing than a selfie showing you nearly filling the frame with the Mona Lisa in a supporting role. Sharing your travels with friends is one thing, making it all about you is quite another.0 -
In the poker tourneys I play in a lot of people can't lay their phone down. They are not allowed to be on the phone while actually involved in a hand but it still takes time as they have to put them down etc. before looking at their cards. I shouldn't complain though, anyone spending that much time on their phone is pretty much dead money, very few of these types make it very deep. Paying attention has it's rewards, rewards they never receive.
If they were smart they would be looking at poker related material that may do them some good, but most are following sports or texting someone, some are watching movies.0 -

I have one as well, but I only use it as a tool when needed. It doesn't control my life, and I don't get 'panic attacks' if I don't have it with me.
The people that live with these things in their hands obviously suffer from addictive personalities,.....similar to alcoholics and drug abusers. A lot of people are simply incapable of doing things in moderation. Add in a healthy dose of vanity and self interest that is displayed via social media, and you have a perfect storm IMHO.0 -

I simply stated in a more eloquent way that I thought you were being a bit harsh regarding calling anyone who takes a picture classless (except yourself) and that I consider taking a picture of oneself in front of or nearby a landmark or something you find interesting OK. Each to his own.

Yea, flashing gang signs and showing titty while posing is real classy. Sorry you have issue with me posting images of my cars and food that I prepare. The food is primarily responsible for the cars. That and proper investments. KMA.
