Living In The Dorm Or Barracks
When i was in the military i lived in the dorms about 18 months before i got married. About 8 months after i got done with school and at my permanent station.
I was in the Air Force and we had 2 people to a hotel size room. Unless you were a NCO or E-4 then you had your own room. I was lucky my roomate lived off of base and as long as his room passed weekly inspections he let me have it all by myself.
We did not have a single bathroom but a bathroom on every floor with showers. Most people on the same floor worked the same hours to keep the noise level down for sleeping people.
We had inspection on Wed or Thur i cant remember but they normally did not inspect sleeping people rooms. During my 10 years in the military i might have worked 18 months during the day. The yes sir, no sir and the crisp uniforms worked day time. The true mechanics worked night.
It was crazy about 1 night every 2 weeks or less i would be taking a shower and a girl would come walking in and take a shower with me. Every day except inspection day we would have girls hanging out in the day room all day and night just looking for a room to spend the night. Usually first come first serve. Just guessing i would guess that there was at least 20 girls in a 200 person dorm. So you had good odds of hooking up with someone.
I wonder if it is still like that now.
We would go get food and drink from the cafeteria to feed them

In 1973 I went on an extended trip to Europe. Among my many travels, I went to visit my brother who was in the Army. He was stationed at the huge Army medical complex in Frankfurt.
I went into the barracks, I was surprised I could get in because I had long hair and a beard I hardly looked like a soldier.
The barracks room was a large room with six beds, no bunk beds.
Since the guys worked shifts around the clock, there was always an empty bed. Now, I was planning to stay in a Youth Hostel, but the guys liked me, and they said I could stay in the barracks.
Well I couldn't imagine that I could do that, but I did. Somehow I stayed there for 2 weeks and didn't get kicked out.
I will tell you another thing, every day one of those troops would come in with some hashish, the Army guys were smoking hash in that room around the clock. The Army didn't have a marijuana drug test in those days.0 -

1961 Ft. Jackson SC. Just tents, 30,000+ recruits, no dorm or barracks. Cuban Missile Crisis, Red Alert and five minutes to hit the street at attention when you hear that whistle. Yep, only way to beat the clock was to sleep in our clothes. 0 -
Barracks inspection? And once a week? Hell, if I wanted that sort of aggravation I would have joined the Army. I heard they even had to get up early every day and exercise. 0 -
The only time I was in an open-bay barracks from WW-II was back in the early 60s when I went to Civil Air Patrol summer camp at Chanute AFB (now long gone). That was the first time I was hit by lightning - when a bolt hit the barracks and I happened to be touching a room-long pipe that served as a clothes rack.
Fast forward to 1969 when I lived in Bachelor Officer Quarters at Laredo AFB (also now long gone) for pilot training. That was more dorm, with single-person rooms with a shared bathroom between. No dorm stories from that, I was too busy learning to fly to have adventures other than that.0
